This time it is for te benefit of Willamette Chapter, Am erican Bed Cross. And while people are doing something for the Red Cross the fact remains that while the soldiers are in France have been pretty well cared for in the way of Christmas packets, the boys at home in the cantonments are to be remembered. Hence the call for 415 additional packets of Christmas presents from the local Red Cross. o Under the direction of James W. iiott who has so successfully put on several plays in tne city, tne local jmk lodge will present "A Man From Home." The manuscripts have already been re ceived and rehearsals are under way. The leading parts will be taken by prom ment people of the city who have here tofore assisted in home theatricals. The play probably will bo given the first week in December and the proceeds giv en by the Elks to some patriotic organ ization. For several generations there has been a rather indistinct idea as to what the infernal regions look like. This unde sirable locality is sometimes called Shool, then again Hades, and again Gehenna. The Anglo-Saxon word is just plain "hell." What we intended to say' was that at the Bligh theatre this evening there will be shown this internal region with all its fire and brimstone according to the ideas of Dante, who, wrote all about" it after taking an extensive tour of the place where the wicked are supposed to go. Anyhow, its an interesting picture and one of the best the Bligh has offered for many a day. - o It will be fine practice for the school children and also be appreciated by the soldier boys. In the Salem high school and also the three junior high schools, the English departments will write let ters to the boys of Company M and toll them what is happening along the Wil lamette. In letters received from soldier boys the big complaint is that they do not receive enough letters from home. o The oldest Inhabitants will be obliged now to talk of the remarkably dry fall weather and also the fact that on the 21st of November of 1917, the river was 1.5 feet below zero. Just about this time of the year the normal guage of the river is tour or live teet higher. He left for te east last night. o A lecture on Christian Science will be delivered Thursday evening at the First Baptist church by the Rev. F. W. Carstens of Medford. The lecture is entitled, "Is It -Christian?" This lec ture has been delivered by Mr. Car stens in many places and is highly com mended as a thoughtful, frank and cour teous presentation. The lecture is free and a silver offering will be taken. . o Owing to the many attractions that will be on Thanksgiving eve, Salem lodge B, P. O. E. announces that its Thanksgiving dance will be held on Monday evening, Nov. 26, instead of Thursday evening as first announced. The new depot will be built on the site of the old one. At a meeting of the Central Trades Council held last evening the principal address was delivered by Otto Haitwig of Portland. Delegates from all the local unions were present. Arthur W. Law rence presided as toastmaster and the evening's entertainment included a pro gram of music and short talks, follow ed by refreshments. Two telephone girls and a lineman who is on a strike were present and explained their position claiming loyalty to the government but that there was some grievance to be ad justed. o The man who is mechanically inclin ed is sure of a good job iu the navy. A man who can qualify as a chief spec ial mechanic, which means that he could become a foreman, will receive $145.70 a month and all found. A spe ciifl nieeanic of the first class will get on the payroll at $91 a month and all found. An engineerman of the first class starts in at $55.50 a month. The age limit is from 21 to 35 years and the navy wants thousands of men. -o "For the benefit of our wives, daugh ters and sweethearts".
