Next Saturday there will be another
tag day in Salem. This time it is for
te benefit of Willamette Chapter, Am
erican Bed Cross. And while people are
doing something for the Red Cross the
fact remains that while the soldiers are
in France have been pretty well cared
for in the way of Christmas packets,
the boys at home in the cantonments
are to be remembered. Hence the call
for 415 additional packets of Christmas
presents from the local Red Cross.

Under the direction of James W. iiott
who has so successfully put on several
plays in tne city, tne local jmk lodge
will present "A Man From Home."
The manuscripts have already been re
ceived and rehearsals are under way.
The leading parts will be taken by prom
ment people of the city who have here
tofore assisted in home theatricals. The
play probably will bo given the first
week in December and the proceeds giv
en by the Elks to some patriotic organ
ization.
For several generations there has been
a rather indistinct idea as to what the
infernal regions look like. This unde
sirable locality is sometimes called
Shool, then again Hades, and again
Gehenna. The Anglo-Saxon word is
just plain "hell." What we intended
to say' was that at the Bligh theatre
this evening there will be shown this
internal region with all its fire and
brimstone according to the ideas of
Dante, who, wrote all about" it after
taking an extensive tour of the place
where the wicked are supposed to go.
Anyhow, its an interesting picture and
one of the best the Bligh has offered
for many a day.

It will be fine practice for the school
children and also be appreciated by the
soldier boys. In the Salem high school
and also the three junior high schools,
the English departments will write let
ters to the boys of Company M and toll
them what is happening along the Wil
lamette. In letters received from soldier
boys the big complaint is that they do
not receive enough letters from home.
o
The oldest Inhabitants will be obliged
now to talk of the remarkably dry
fall weather and also the fact that on
the 21st of November of 1917, the river
was 1.5 feet below zero. Just about this
time of the year the normal guage of
the river is tour or live teet higher.
