The decis ion of the supreme court handed down this morning in the Beattie case, reads simply: "The Judgment of the circuit court at Chesterfield being plainly right, a writ of error Is denied." The ruling was read by Judge Keith. It is believed that the character of the ruling precludes any Inter ference by the Eovernor. unit nn. era! expectation Is that Beattie will go to the electric chair. "I know nothing about thn mnttnr officially," said Supt. Wood of the Virginia penitentiary. "Until I am Informed, Beattie will hear nothing form me. As a matter of fact, I probably will let memhnin of hi. own family break the nwa tn him The superintendent added thad ne aoes not care to talta ant ohnncoe of becoming attached to a man wnose electrocution he probably will direct Boon. It was said 'todav that; Ttonttla slept well last night and ate a hearty breakfast. After reading the papers he Inquired if there ias any word from the court of appeals. It is believed that application for a reprieve will be Bled with the governor within 24 hours. JUST A WORD TO THOSE WHO GROW FRUIT PleftSfl rArtlpmhpr thn tha mnot scale and other true infections Is suitable time to spray for San Jose as early as possible after the foliage has fallen. Keen thin in ml ml omi do not wait for the Fruit Inspector to Berve notice on you. Make your arrangements early to either do the spraying yourself or give your re quirements to some one to spray for you. Your Infected trees are of no value to you as dealers have been notified not to receive Infected fruit, and It will be condemned where ever found by the fruit Inspector. You can obtain the ready prepared Lime Sulphur solution at the vari ous Fruit Unions, Feed Stores, or Factory here In Salem, or on ap plication at this office you can ob tain the formula for making the dif ferent kinds of spray and how to apply them. I desire to say that the cities and towns of the county are more In fected with the different Insects than the country, and I hope the property owners will take early ac tion to eradicate the same without compelling me to enforce the law. My office is at the Salem. Fruit Union where I can be found on Sat urdays and Mondays of each week and I wll be only too glad to help you In any way I can to better the conditions of your trees. In traveling over the county I find many old neglected trees that are covered with moss, infected with Wooly Aphis and other insects. It would be a hard matter to spray a majority of these trees until after they had been thoroughly pruned; but if this was done and then the trees well sprayed and cared for you would be surprised at the amount of good fruit you would have next fall. I will say for your encourage ment that there has been more spraying done the past season than In any one previous year, as the different dealers In Salem have dis posed of approximately seven hun dred barrels of lime sulphur solu tion which was used in and around Salem. If the towns of Marlon county outside of Sslem used the same proportion It would Indicate that the people were waking up to the Importance of cleaning up their trees. A great many people are com plaining to me that they have cleaned up their trees; but their neighbors have done nothing In this direction. This we admit is dis couraging and is not fair to the rmes who are making the effort. You would not think very well of your neighbor across the way who was raising and transporting Cana da thistle on to your property for you to fight continually. Be Just, clean up your trees or cut them down and let us all work together to make Marlon county the banner county of better fruit. C. D. CONSTABLE, Fruit Inspector. o . The woman who marries a man to reform him, may hrve a good motive but very poor Judgment, also a big contract. There are several good pre scriptions for chronic dyspepsia and Indigestion of an annoying character, but I have had better success with a scientific treatment known as tiio peptione (tablets) than anything else; trlopc-ptlne treats the stomach and digestive tract to bring about a cure, and not merely to relieve, as most advertised "dyspepsia tablets," containing pepsin, do. Try the trlo peptlne tablets several weeks and let mo hear from you again.
