"Jimmle" Is a fine piece of restrained, high class acting, that In dicates a growing dramatic power of presentation. Nothing Is overdone or underdone, while the atmosphere of the play Is Justifiable In every par ticular. It would have done Gover nor West's 'ieart good to have heard It, as It Is a complete working out of the progressive Oregon governor's prison policy- Ev.n the sheriff in the last act warms up on the side of humanity. The entire cast Is strong, and there Is a growing inclination on the part of Salem people to attend plays. The standard drama has a hard time between musical comedy and the 10-cent electhics and the 15 cent and 25-cent orpheuros. The roaring wind and rain storm cat down the attendance at the Bllgh Orpheum, but there were fair crowds for all the performances. The res cue from the mine is a thriller on the Bcreen, and colored act Is a screamer. The best and broadest coon actor yet seen on the boards is at the Bllgh. Ye Liberty has a violin soloist and a vocalist of good Quality and both of them win recalls that often, have to be refused for want of time on the crowded programs. singers direct from the best German conservatories, for a soloist Three nights of picture shows at The Grand Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night Manager Waters, formerly of Ye Liberty, has made a long study of the motion picture business and alms to get the best "The Third Degree" at The Grand. If MIsb Spader can keep up b r lick on the road, and she seems capable of sustained effort, look out for her to become a Belasco In Eklrts. , ,i Ye Liberty Is running a tour through China and the Chinatown of New York City, that Is causing great commotion among the Chinese people of this- city. Many of them have attended the show and are ter ribly Interested, especially the wo men. There are exposures of slave trade and opium dens that strike a very deep chord In their nature, and reveal the worst aspects of criminal life, that Is not to be mistaken for the general character of Chinese population. The lecture at Ye Lib erty Is alone worth Uie price of admission. Tonight Billy Clifford presents "The Man, the Girl, and the Game." Mr. Clifford has never been In Salem but what he lac ks for being a strang er Is made up by te display of fem inine attractions. It will be Impos sible to predict the effect of this mus ical comedy on some of the younger men and even some of the oldor ones, especially If they get close to the footlights, as some persist in do ing to help their weak eyes. The "Girl of the Golden West promises to become a society event on next Saturday night and several box parties are being arranged. It is a great western play, and one of the scenes with a sunset on the great snow peak, and electrical effects Is said to be unequalled In the history of American stage scenic art Tuesday night at The Grand will be seen Senator Gore of Oklahoma In a lecture stunt. He Is the blind senator they nearly always have one man In the senate who can't see and a great many who don't want to see, and the one who can't will tell about those who don't want to. By the payment of 75 cents a month, its members, largely carmen, are in sured medicine and medical attend ance when needed and $10 a week sick benefits. In addition $1,000 is paid the wife or estate at death, and in case of death of wife, $250 Is paid. Robert M. La Follette . leads In favor for the presidency among Seattle Republi cans, and William Jennings Bryan leads among the Democrats, accord ing to a straw vote taken by the Seattle Star. President Taft is last among them on the list of seven candidates voted for. The result of the poll, announced today follows: LaFollette, 2,193; Bryan, 920; Debs, 435; Wilson, 440; Clark, 230; Harmon, 130; Taft, 75. Bryan's name was not placed on the ballot until the fourth day, when he led other Democrats and his name was then added. Seattle is nominally Republican and the poll is significant.
