On the contrary It might bo held that such a substanco would act beneficially upon the pro duction of milk and butter. It Is .thereforo not surprising that tho practical tests bear out such an opinion. In the report of the Now York Agricultural Experiment sta tion about "Brewers' Grains as a Food for Milch Cows" (1884) Is found thlB statement: "Wo havo thus our answer vory plainly out lined; tho feeding of the brewers' grafhs was conductive to tho flow of milk." Tho action of both those bacteria aro checked by tho very acid thoy pro duce And thus It happens that af ter a cortaln tlmo a now and dif ferent fermentation sets in. Thh InBt fermentation Is .tho re sult of tho activity of tho putro faction bactoria or tormobactorla, and this chango Is tho cause. of tho rottonlng of tho grains. This was found to bo especially true In regard to the feeding of the cavalry horses. Observations of 'Mnercker and Delbruck, German authorities on tho brewing and donatured alcohol ln dustlres, proved that, 75 liters (18 gallons) of distillers refuso was suf ficient to produco the maximum flow of milk, and as tho browers' grains contain moro nourishment by far than distillers' refuse, not moro than ten to twelve gallons por day, of wot brewers' grains should bo given. It has nlso been proved that warm feed is moro conducive to. tho flow of milk. On account of the largo amount of water contlned In tho grains It Is advisable to reduce the proportion of such grains for young cattle which aro growing, or horses who havo to do hard work, bb tho grains are not suitable for producing solid mus cular flesh.
