Practical Shoemen Expert Shoe Repairing Oar Specialty 326 State Street Wo do not think any Intelligent porson has ever supposed that the universal shortugo of cars is caused by tho deliberate- conspiracy of car rlors to Impede and tio up business. Such tnlk Is silly. It is caused by the lack of equipment sufficient to transact the business under existing conditions. Thcro nro not enough cars, nor is there motlvo power suffi cient. Tho figures recontly printed by tho Chronicle show that tho lack of equipment is due to tho lack of plants sufficient to build and deliver It. All the plants nro worked to their capacity and now plants are being constructed as fast as cnpl tal and labor can do it. It Is not cortnin that if thoro wore cars enough and locomotives enough, tho traffic could be moved much, more rapidly. On some roads and for some traffic, doubtless it could. On other roads, or important strotches of road, the tracks now seem to bo worked for nil v thoro is In thorn More trains would simply mean mora smash tips. In tho opinion of J. J Hill, who ought to know, tho bottom of tho troublo is too much slnglo .track, or too much doublo track where tho traffic requires four tracks or more. With adequato trackage and locomotives thoy could probably, by exortlon, bo made to answer. Tho business of tho country has grown faBter than tho facilities for trans acting it. I Tho only rollof, apparent ly, must come from moro tracks in addition to nil tho equipment which can bo got. This means continuous Investments In railroad proporty on an cnromouB scale for years to come. It means a demand for cnpltnl be yond the powor of thlB country to provide. It means dopiands for ma terial boyond tho capacity of our stool plants. It means Iribor of nil ktndB in greater quantities than ovor. Ulti mately a country gets finished. Its resources becomo fully dovolopcd and equipment is provided for transact ing nil tho business which that coun try can produce. England Is com paratively a finished country. Tho Unltod States' Ih very far indeed from it. Its production in nil lines is destined to Increaso very rapidly for many yoars to como, and every Jn creaso of production involves in crease of equipment, not only In transportation and terminal facili ties, but in moro houses, city streets, olllco buildings, banks and whatever iclso enters Into an ndequato equip ment for transacting tho buslnoss of jn continent. All that wo can expect is Hint oxpoctaton of profit will urgo overy mnn to do his best to provide necessary facilities. Energetic mon nro probably doing that now. Tho rush of "moving tho crops" will soon' bo ovor for thols yonr. That will relcaso somo oqulpmont. Cars and locomotives nro building as fast as thoy can bo built. Thoro will bo moro equipment noxt yonr than now, but unloss Providonco visits us wltl. j short crops oV a monoy panlo wo do I not seo how transportation facilities ! nro to becomo ndequato to tho bust I ness of tho country for somo lime to como.
