A large tree had been marked out by Yaws this mornlriK for falling pre paratory to cutting the same into cordwood. It had been well chopped through when Yates started around to the other side to complete the task or fulling It when suddenly and without warning tlio great trunk swayed and came crashing down, catching the tin'ortu- nato chopper lo Its descent and pin ning him down beneath Its enormous weight. The trunk or the tree rostcd smiarcly across Yatos' stomach forc ing his body Into the yielding earth of the Ucld and crushing It to Much an extent that his waist could almost be spanned by the two hand: Friends who were not far away wcro powerless to prevent the acci dent or save the unfortunate man but rushed quickly to the rescue und soon succeeded In re moving the tree from his body. Modile, Ala., Jan. 21.-Tho gov ernment steamer Pansy touched at JJlloxl, Miss., and reports finding on Breton island a part of the stern of the naphtha launch Paul Jones, also a yawl boat with bow smashed and other small articles from the launch. The condition of the wreckage tends to show that the naphtha tank blew up and tore the boat to pieces. The Pansy met the Maud with Messrs. Jones and Taggart o:i board. The latter visited the wreckage and ldcn tilled it ns part of the Paul Jones. No bodies wore found. SJJ ' Skeletons Unearthed. Kankrancibco. Jan. 21. Contract ors employed In government construc tion work on Goat Island unearthed eight skeletons. It Is u mystery how they camo there, and there nre several wild stories afloat. One Is that Goat Island, which is now a government reserve, was the haunt of pirates, and that much hurried trcasurcis hidden on the Island. Another Is that the Island was used by the Spaniards In the early days as a burial-ground. Several attempts have been mudo to locate the hidden treasure, but with out success. The unearthed are of enormous proportions, rew being less than six feet six Inches long.
