day shortly affcr noon, that Charlie
Yates of Frultland, had been crushed
to death by the accidental falling of
n law tree, which he was cutting
down.
A large tree had been marked out
by Yaws this mornlriK for falling pre
paratory to cutting the same into
cordwood. It had been well chopped
through when Yates started around
to the other side to complete
the task or fulling It when
suddenly and without warning
tlio great trunk swayed and came
crashing down, catching the tin'ortu-
nato chopper lo Its descent and pin
ning him down beneath Its enormous
weight. The trunk or the tree rostcd
smiarcly across Yatos' stomach forc
ing his body Into the yielding earth
of the Ucld and crushing It to Much an
extent that his waist could almost be
spanned by the two hand:
Friends who were not far away
wcro powerless to prevent the acci
dent or save the unfortunate man
but rushed quickly to the
rescue und soon succeeded In re
moving the tree from his body. Hut

haying ceased and lire being extinct.
One of the party, W. 1.1. Ramson,
brought the sad nows to town and In
formed J. A. Yates, tlio brother of
the unfortunate man, and who Is lin
ployed us chief cook at .1. E. Darnell's
restaurant, of his accident.
Word was also sent to his relatives
who live In other parts of the stale.
Charles Yates was about 35 years
of ugc and Is well known In this city.
He wus married only last Chrlstmus
to an accomplished young ludy of the
country, to whom his death Is a sud
den and most shocking loss, The
parents of tlio victim live In the vic
inity of Frultland and members of the
family are scattered In oilier parts of
the state.
As yet no funeral urrangemonts
huve been completed.

At that time Mr. Albert was a
mombcrof the council sworn to do
his duty to Salem yet acting as bond
agent.
He, with his usual vltupcrutlon,
had forced a bond Isssuo of MO.OOO
upon thocity. The bond llrm delayed
delivery thinking they hud a sure
thing when the council surprised them
by a reconsideration.
Under the excuse or leaving for u
law book, Alderman Aliwrt left his
scat and telegraphed to his bond llrm.
This was answered as above. Ihc
telegram together with other reuduble
papers which were in the hands of
thn quickly departing Williams, urc
yet In Saturn. Sua little ancient his

JJlloxl, Miss., and reports finding on
Breton island a part of the stern of
the naphtha launch Paul Jones, also
a yawl boat with bow smashed and
other small articles from the launch.
The condition of the wreckage tends
to show that the naphtha tank blew
up and tore the boat to pieces. The
Pansy met the Maud with Messrs.
Jones and Taggart o:i board. The
latter visited the wreckage and ldcn
tilled it ns part of the Paul Jones. No
bodies wore found.

Skeletons Unearthed.

ors employed In government construc
tion work on Goat Island unearthed
eight skeletons. It Is u mystery how
they camo there, and there nre several
wild stories afloat. One Is that Goat
Island, which is now a government
reserve, was the haunt of pirates, and
that much hurried trcasurcis hidden
on the Island. Another Is that the
Island was used by the Spaniards In
the early days as a burial-ground.
Several attempts have been mudo to
locate the hidden treasure, but with
out success. The unearthed are of
enormous proportions, rew being less
than six feet six Inches long.
