Details of How It Was Made, Heroes of the Merrk mac Again Free- Exchange Is Effected Before the Doomed City, One Spanish Lieutenant and Fifteen Privates Paid the Ransom, Off Juragua, July 0. by Associated Press dispatch boat, yla Kingston. 10 a m., July 7. Naval Constructor Richmond P. Hobson, of the flagship New York, and the seyen seamen who sailed the collier Merrlmac Into the channel of the harbor of Santiago de Cuba, June 3d, and sunk her there, were surrendered today by the Span ish military tuthorltles In -exchange for prisoners captured by the Amer lean forces. Hobson and Ins men were escorted through the lines by captain Chad wick, of the New York. Every step of the journey wus marked by the wildest dcraontstration. The Ameri can soldiers, threw 'aside all Bemblanco of order, scrambled out of the entrenchments and knocked over tents and guys and other camp para phernalia In their eagernecs to 6ee the returning heroes and sent cheer after cheer after the men who sailed Into the jaws of death to serve their country. The same scenes of enthu siasm were repeated on the arrival at the hospital station and Juragua. Hobson, who reached there in ad vance of his comrades, was taken on board tho New York Immediately. The flagship's deck was lined with officers and men as he climed up the aide and stepped on board tho vessel, with shouts and cheers lie and his comrades were recognized by tho crews In the transports lying near the New York. Hobson had little to 6ay regarding his exporlence, except ing that he was well treated by the Spaniards. All his men are in excel lent health. The place selected for tho ex change was under a tree between the Spanish and American lines, and two-thirds of a mile beyond the en trenchments occupied by the Rough Riders, near General Wheeler's head quarters, the center of the American line. The American prisoners lei t the Rclna Mercedes hospital at 2:45 this afternoon In charge of Major Irlcs, the Spanish staff officer. The pris oners were conducted to the meeting place afoot, not blindfolded. Colonel John Jacob Astor and Lieutenant Milloy were in charge of tho .Spanish prisoners. These consisted of Lieutenant Atncllo Volez and Aurclius, a German, belonging to tho Twenty-ninth regu lar Infantry, who was captnred at El Guaey Friday last, Lieutenant Adolph Aries, of the first provisional regiment of Barcelona, fourteen non commissioned officers and ono private The Spanish troops were taken through the American lines, mounted and blndfoldcd. The meeting was extremely courte ous and very formal, andno attempt was made on .either side to discuss anything but the matter In hand. Irles was given the choice of three lieutenants In exchange for Hobson, aud also informed that he could have all fifteen men exchanged for the American sailors. The Spanish of ficers selected Lieutenant Aries. The other Spanish officers were conducted back to Jaragtia, and then not later thau 4 o'clock Ires courteously cnougb, but in a tone which Indicated con siderable defiance, said: "Our understanding is, gentleman that this truce comes to an end at 5 o'clock." Colonel Astor looked at his watch, bowed at the Spanish officer without making any reply and started slowly back to the American lines with Hob son and his companions. The meeting and exchange of prls oners had taken place In full view of both the American and Spanish sol diers entrenched near the meeting place. The keenest interest was taken In the occasion. The escort from the flagship had brought a change rf clothing and new uniforms for Hobson and all of his men, and they were given a short res pltc to change their apparel. Before leaving for the coast, LleU' tenant Hobson had an Interview with General Shaf ter. To the correspondent of the Asso elated Press, nobson declined to talk of his adventure on the Merrlmac, stating that he must first make his report to Admiral Sampson, but as to his experience in Santiago he said: " During the first four days we were prisoners of war, and were confined in Morro castle, and I assure you that these tvere extremely uncomfortable and disagreeable days. TLe Spaniards did not exactly Ill-treat us, but it took them some time to recover from the shock, caused by what most of them considered our Yankee Impudence in trying to blockade their harbor. As a rule the officers and men, who came into contact with us, were gruff in speech and sullen In manner. For Admiral Cervera I have nothing but highest admiration. His action, In Informing Admiral Sampson of our safety, I regard as that of a kind hearted, generous man. and a chival rous officer. Ho repeatedly spoke to me of his admiration for what he called one of the most daring acts in naval history, though I am sure we were not entitled to the commend ation we received, for there were hun drens of other men In our ships who would have been glad to undertake to do the same thing. "While we were In Moro Castle, we were naval prisoners, but at the end of four days we were transferred to the jurisdiction of the army, and were removed to the Relna Mercedes hos pital on the outskirts of Santiago, where we remained until yesterday. Wo knew but little jf what was going on in the city, though, of course, we could always tell when our fleet was bombarding the shore batteries, and we could easily distinguish the ter rific explosions by the Vesuvius throwing dynamite shells. "Several times at night we were also fully aware, that land -batteries were fighting outside the city. The little Information the Spaniard would give us could not be relied upon. "One thing that I found out In the hospital, was that a large number of Spanish officers were wounded in Fri day's fight, for many were brought to the hospital to be treated. Numbers of badly aimed bulletts came Into tho hospital windows on Friday, but I do not believe any one was Injured by them. Our quarters there were very clean and comfortable, and ttio ' food was fairly good, " - "in fact, I have no reason to com plain of our treatment as prisoners of war. Tho prcjudlco which tho Span lards showed against us during tho first fow days soon wore away. We conducted ourselves properly, and simply forced them to treat us well." OREGON 'STATE NEWS.
