A Newton county local Methodist preacher, who works for hiuiscli during tho weok nnd labors for tho Lord on Sundays, wns called upon to baptize an old lady by immersion. Ho tried his best to got Brothor Bridges and other preachors to do tho work, but failed, so ho went forth in search of a good placo, and found a washed out nolo of calm water in a spring branch, but was forced to cross a shallow run of tho river in order to get to tho branch. Tho main run of the river was too swift for bapli3inal purposes, becauso tho old lady was too heavy nnd clumsy to hold against tho current. The banks of both streams wcro lined with people, nnd as tho mourn ful melody of a "Hark from tho tomb" song went over hill nnd dnlo tho preacher proudly led tho happy sister to tho water's edgo, and ns her feot carao in contact with tho wnrm river water bIio oxclnimed, "Oh, how nico this sweet water feels." "I thought to myself," said tho preach er, 'Old lady, when you striko that holo in tho spring branch you'll chnngo your tuno.'" And roport said she did, for when tho cold wator began to close around her sho wont to pieces, as it were, for her form -trembled and hor teeth chattered, while tho prenchor showed that ho was freezing about tho body, no mat- tor how warm ho felt around tho heart At this point his foot struck n log in tho holo, and ho "got on it with both feot," in order to havo n lovernge, so ns to let tho old lady down and bring hor up safely, whilo his bro.thor stood by hor sidp to aid him if necessary. Everything was now- ready and tho minister began, "Ibaptizo theol and both feot llow out from under him, as tho log was round and slick, and sister and prenchor disappeared un der tho water, tho log diving them; but in a moment both camo up and tho brother caught tho sister by tho hand and led hor gently to tho bank, whilo tho preacher wiped tho water from his eyes and cars with a red handkerchief and looked up and down tho branch to seo what had be come of tho old woman. As ho bo held her shouting on tho shoro and shaking hands with the multitudo, who thought that tho baptism had been administered according to tho custom of tho Scriptures, ho raised both of his own hands and exclaimed: "Tho Lord bo praised, for yonder sho is sat'o and alive on land. Tho fact is, Hawkins," said tho tender hearted preacher, "hang mo if I didn't beliovo for tho time being that I had drowned instead of baptized tho dear old soul." Covington Enter prise. Why a Dolled Lobster Is Red. In all crustaceans, ns, indeed, in almost everything in nature, thero is a cortain per cent, of iron. Upon boiling, tho lobster is oxidized; tho effect is largely duo also to tho per centage of muriatic acid which exists nnturally in tho shell. Tho chomi cal chango which takes placo hero is almost similar to that which occurs in tho burning of a brick. In boil ing a lobster its coat censes to bo a living substnnco, and to n cortain ox tent it takes a now character. It is as a brick would bo afterburn ing. This effect can also bo produced by tho sun, but necessarily not so rapidly, as tho hont of that luminary, although moro intense is not con centrated sufficiently to produco the result. Tho sun also exercises a bleaching influence which consumes tho oxide nlinost ns fast ns it is formed, leaving tho shell white, or nearly puro lime. Gloucester Times. Ho took tho wrotchod and scraggy beast to tho butcher of tho village, who said ho could not givo him moro than sixty marks for it. So tho peasant determined to slaughter tho beast himself, nnd try to sell tho meat among Ids noighbors. In tho stomach of tho cow ho found soven gold coins of twenty marks each, too silver thalors and twoBmall koys. Tho cow thus brought him double tho sum which tho butcher had offorcd for hor. The cow must havo swallowed n purso at somo placo or other, but whoro or whon her owner could not guess. London Tit-Bits. ' Prodigious Heawucd. "Thoro is much that is wondorful to bo told about seaweeds, " Bnid n naturalist. "Somo of them aro giants in sizo. Ono species, common in tho North sea, frequently grows to tho longth of thirty or forty feot, dovol oping in tho shnpo of a long cord about tho sizo of a quill, attached at ono end to tho bottom and tho rest supported by tho water. This is notldng, howovor, to tho prodigious 'macrocystis,' which uttnin 1,500 foot in length. If an other baking powder is forced upon you by the grocer, see that you are charged the correspondingly lower price. Bread, biscuit, cakes and muffins are not known in most delicate and perfect quality where Royal Baking Powder is not used. .. Roping the Sun. Ono popular myth of tho South Sea islanders expresses tho very poet ical belief that tho Island of Tonga rova was fished out of tho bottom of tho sea by n god, who used for tho purpose tho tail of tho constellation Scorpio, baiting this remarkable hook with a star. Another divinity accomplished a work of great benefi cence by regulating the sun. Tho orb of day used to havo a trick of setting almost ns soon as it had risen, so that it was impossiblo to got through nay work. Even an oven of food could not bo prepared and cooked before darkness camo on. So tho deity Maui carefully plaited six great ropes of strong cocoanut fiber, making nooses in them, and with these ho sought tho hole at the edge of tho sky through which the sun cliinbs up from tho nether world each morning. At this point of exit from tho land of ghosts into tho heavens tho six nooses were placed. They entrapped tho sun, and that luminary wns glad to agree to bo in future moro deliber ate in his movements, so as to enable tho inhabitants of tho earth to Ret through their employments. Ex change Ore ok und Latin. I am afraid that tradition is likely to bo too strong for us, and that tho old story will go on for a long timo to come; that Latin and Greek will still bo tho staple of education, nnd that the making of Lntin and Greek verses will bo tho intellectual exor cise of tho boys of tho future ns it has been of tho boys of tho past I do not for a moment deny that thero aro masterpieces of beautiful form in old literature. To dony it would bo absurd. I should bo very sony, for my part, to givo up tho knowl edge I havo of these languages, and I remember what an era it was in tho expansion of my own thought whon first 1 was sot to work on tho Republic of Plato. But whon wo speak of Greek and Latin literature, I suppose it is liko English and French literature in this respect, that it contains good, bad and indifferent It is a great mis take to think that everybody who wrote in Greek wrote beautifully, or that every work composed in Latin about tho Augustan orn is a model to admiro and imitate. Archbishop Thomson. Ho Had Studied. It is to bo feared that oven in tho United States so called liberally edu cated mon aro sometimes ignorant of many simple and useful things; but what shall bo said of tho state of edu cation in China? It is exceedingly common to find men who havo spent moro years in study than they can remember, who yot cannot rend tho simplest collo quial book, nor repeat apago of what thoy havo studied. A few months ago tho writer mot in a dispensary a man who seemed to bo examining his tally card with a minutO attention which indicnted that ho recognized tho characters. Tho latter woro few nnd simple, merely indicating his surname and uumbor, "Wang, Number 230." On being nsked if ho know tho riinrnctors by sight, ho replied that he recognized "about half of thom."
