Yr : fllli DEMOCRATS. Tfce Political Cauldron News from Other Points. prom omoAao. Cleveland Does not Seem to Have Two-Thirds Yet. CniCAao,Juue20. With dcleRntcs resent from all the states to the Democratic Convention the number lag of forces of the various leaders la diligently iroiug forward. Clevel and's followers this morning display with much ostentation a cnreiully prepared tabl whioh gives Cleveland 883 votes on liret ballot. Just nine teen short of the necessary two-thirds ' to insure bis nomination. The anti Cleveland faction including not only the Hill but also the Uoies.Gray and Gorman men scout these figures as unreasonably large aud assert theh investigations show that Cleveland la assured of but little over a bare majority on first ballot and they still hold his forces will bebteadily disin tegraUd thereafter, and the raco be come one of the dark hores. The most uncertain feature at present li the attitude of Senator Gcmum of Maryland as leader of the dcitgutioi he protests loyally to Cleveland bm despite this his name Is more discus sed a a dark horse capable of unit iuj: all factions opposed to the uomlna lion of Cleveland than any other. The loyalty of the Iowa delegation to Holes has aroiibbd admiration. It has been suggested that Boles would be a good vice-presidential cand.date in the event of Cleveland's nomination. It does not even fiud a courteous recention at the Iowa headquarters. It now looks as if on "the opening ballot the Indlaua dele gation will east 1" votes for Goveuor s Gray and 13 for Clevelaud. The sub committee on temporary oruanl 1 zttioti met tiiis morning and Henry Waltersou quickly won his light, the CO turn itee deciding to recommend the name of lion. W. C. Owens, of Kentucky for temporary chairman. The full committee met this noon aud will confirm the action of the sub committee. It is believed there will be no fight In the convention over tlie matter aud the friends of General fcteveuson, of Illinois, will accept his defeat quietly. frj. P. Sheiiu, of Indlaua, becietaryof the national committee, will be tempo rary aud permanent fcecretary of the convention. It is still Insisted by Gorman's friends the presentation of bis name is yet an open quettiou aud Gorman himself still denies he is n candidate. Opposition to Cleveland is finding the Gorman feeler did not elect special enthusiasm, and have turned " rwar in fntua'a Irinl Hnvunnr lliittH V.V WAV..-.. uv, w. - v.f the effect has been to give increas ed prominence to the Boies boom, scattering tor Boies has been secured in various sections where there is Cleveland opposition. Bouth Caro- I Una is willing to give Boles 12 votes. It Is also reported that iirice and Wattereou are friendly towards I Boles. Carlisle opposes the Boies ! movement and is likely to make it known in the meeting of the Ken tucky delegation this evening. Ex- Becretnry Whitney this morning claimed 650 votes as certain for Cleveland, on first ballot. A signal victory for Clevelaud forc es was fought aud won almost with out a struggle today it was on the question of unit rule In tho Penn- faylvanla delegation. It was under stood a strong eflort would bo made to break the unit in the Keystone jetate and tho result here it was 'thought would bo initiated in other delegatlous. After disposing of tho Beieuiiuu ui ixiiuuiiiicumuii u i estim ation which guaranteed the solid vote of Pennsylvania for Clevelaud pass ed 68 to 4. Chicago, June 0. Illinois dele gation will cast its 48 votes solidly for Cleveland. John M. The PidnuT boom received an impetus Saturday by the arrival of Congressman Springer and his declaration that Cleveland's nomination would be political suicide, aud ills the duty of Illiuois delegates to support Palm er from the very opening of the con vention. Springer said that ir Clevelaud is nominated it would be necessary to reorganize the dem ocratic party in New York. To dit cartl an organization which nom inated and elected Tildeu, which nominated Cleveland twice and once carried tho state for him for president, which nominated and elected him governor, aud which has now Beven successive and signal victories to its credit in the state, would be an act of olitical suicide. Lcannot believe tne national con vention will do it. The arrival of Win. C. Whitney is marked by more nethoJical work for Cleveland. One viileuce of the work by the Cleve .iiiil men was shown today in efforts ning made to reduce the size of the tield to be entered against the lead r. 1 1 each state, where there is k of favorite soup, Cleveland men till be put to work to prevent the i-iiiiination of dark horses. How many of us are there who do not onco in awhile feel just a little un comfortable when we find that we have sat thirteen at the table, or have seen the moon over our left shoulders, or have done any of the thousand and ono things that are supposed to portend evil? Not that wo think for a moment any misfortune really will happen in consequence of theso acts, but the sug gestions are not pleasant, and we wish onr attention had not been called to them. Of course we all laugh at supersti tions, and think them silly, as they are, but nevertheless we do not get away from the unpleasant feeling. I knew nn old lady who considered it positively wicked and unchristian to give up to "foolish superstitions," but she never would allow any ono to rock an empty chair in her presence. You will see people in tho street, who have been hurrying as if anxious to lose no time, stop on a corner and wait five minutes for a long funeral procession to pass. Of all Irish landlords perhaps none was moro popular with his tenants than tho Earl of Leitrim. As an instance of what may bo termed his approachability, it may bo stated that on tho birth of his second son nn old woman on the estate called at Manorvnughan to offer her congratulations and, remarking to tho earl that this was "tho first of the breed" born on Irish soil, suggested that the boy should bo called "Pat." The earl good naturedly said ho might do so, and accordingly tho child bears the name of Hon. Francis Patrick.
