The great Ulster convention, to consider the negative side of the Home rule ques tion, wis held here today. Work was generally suspended. The clt is decorated. Ten thousand dele gates were present, and Duke Aber corn presided. At the conclusion of his sjieech, Sir W. O. Ewart pro posed a resolution, declaring Ulster has avowed a fixed resolve to retain unchanged the present position as an integral portion of the United Kingdom. Democratic Victory. Lanbi.no, Mich., June 17. The supreme court has rendered a deci sion sustaining the constitutionality of tho Miner election law. The decision was unanimous. This law was passed by the last Democratic legislature and provides for tbe choice of presidential electors by congressloual districts lustead of by the state ut large us usual. Pa it is, June 10.-.A curious revo ution has taken place in French literrture and judicial customs. For the first time in the history of the press iu France has a jury recogniz ed the principle that heavy damages should be awarded for defamation of character. M Drumont, a well known anti-Semite, who recently accused a deputy of belug at the same time engaged in drafting a bill relatiug to the Bank of France, was promptly prosecuted by M. Bardeau, and being found guilty, M. Dru mont, was sentenced yesterday to three months' imprisonment and fined 1000 fraucs. Moreover, the court ordered that tbe sentence be published in several journals, and and that the amount of the line be spent iu this way; tbat for eight days speciul prominence be gi'eu to tbe sentence on the first page of M. Drumont's own journal, Le Libre Parole, which is certainly a novel sentence. The trial proved there was absolutely no foundation for Dumont's occupation. Affairs in Brazil. New Yokk, June 17. The Her ald's correspondent at Buenos Ayres, telegraphs that the Brazilian minis ter of commerce has resigned. Four Italian Laborers Hung by a Mob Near Sedro, Wash. Skattlk, June 17. A special from Sedro, Wash., to the I'o-it-Intelli-encersays: A report of the brutal murder of John A. Nelson, foreman of Smith Bros., camp on the line ol the Moute Cristo railroad, by fom Italians, followed by the lynching of the murderer?, was brought here last eveuing. Nel-ou, who had lived In Sedro for some time and had beeu employed by Smith Brothers, rail road contractors, was given a posi tion us foreman over Italian laborers on the grade of the Monte Cristo railroad. The etatement as told to the Post-Iutelllgeucer correspondent was told that Nelsou was attacked by the Italians and durlug the light m iron bar wa3 driven through his head, killing him iustautly. The white men of tho camp became so enraged (about sixty) over the brutal murder that they seized the Italians and iu the presence of 150 of their couiitrymeu, lynched the four murderers. No further particulars have been received, as there Is no wire to the scene. Licking Bridge Disaster. Cincinnati, O,, June 17.- -Another part of the Licking river bridge fell at 0 o'clock yesteaday. There have been all sorts of things said about the unhappy life of Delia Mor gan led iu the little cottage almost in the shadow of the Powers man sion, where the young couple lived. A daughter was born to them, but it failed to bring happiness. The young husband has kept up a pre tension cif duty all the time, but it has been an open secret for a year or two that his wife and his home saw very little of him. It is also stated, though nobody believed it, that tbe jvung wifr was destitute at times, despite the fact tbat her husband was a member of one of the richest families of Rochester and was him self cashier of a prominent banking institution. GEAY-HAIRED LOTHAIRIO. He Was Very Anxious to Marry a Girl of Sixteen. Forsyth e, Pa., June 17. What would have beeu a romnntic marri age was nipped in the bud here yes terday. At an early hour an old man, about sixty years of agp, drove Into the city, accompanied by a rosy-cheeked, bashful girl of uot more than sixteen. The couple at tracted it great deal of attention ou the streets, and they were the ob jects of great attraction when it was learned that they were in search of a minister. The old mau's heart throbbed with joy as he va!ked into the ordinary's ofllce and called for a marriage license. Just then how ever, the would-be groom's joy was replaced by sorrow and disappoint ment, for a prominent minister heard of the intended ceremony and determined thai it was an unjustifi able injury to the unsuspecting girl, aud that he would make an attempt to prevent it, as he knew the groom expectant had a ife living in Flor ida. The liceu?e was rtfu-ed the old man, and a more disappointed lover could not be Imagined. He rew iudiguant, while the girl ut his side smiled coquettishly into his face, reassuring him of ber love. The white-haired lover, though crestfal len at this disappointment, took tbe girl by the baud and led her away, swearing that he would get the license elsewhere and make the young gill his bride. Ed ward Blake has been asked by a cablegram signed by the Irish par liamentary party, including Justin McCarthy, John Dillon, Michael Davltt, Timothy llealy aud William O'Brien, to allow his nomination for a constituency in Ireland, has created a profound sensation here. The World, un Independent Journal iu politics, a great admirer of BlaKe, and favorable to home rule for Ire laud, comes out with a strong leader observing that ilon.
