plained that the market is over
stocked with strawberries. The
pr io has gone down to 0 and 8 cents
a box. There are a few dealers who
are handling superior fruit. Con
sumers complain that the berries as
a rule are not ripe; that the boxes
do not hold a quart by weight or
measure; that the berries are not
sorted, but that large, small, good
and bad all go together. It is a fact
that fine large dead ripe berries or
any fruit sells better and more is
consumed.

Mitchell has so far recovered as to
be able to talk over with his friends
how he happened to get shot. It
seems ho was wiping the gun to put
it away until ho returned from the
East. He had to use couslderab'e
force to break the gun at the breech
and doing so discharged the piece,
Ho hud removed the load a few days
before and unknown to him the
cartridge had been returned to Its
place, hence the result.

Well-Finished Closing Exercises of
the Blind Institute.
"Blind leaders of tho blind"
does not apply to the work
done by tho state of Oregon
for her sightless youth. They are
taught the Jhree R's, the arts and
sciences. A fine audience was pres
ent Tuesday evening at tho M. E.
church to witness public inteiest
lu tho Oregon Institute for the Edu
cation of tho Blind. State Superin
tendent McElroy, and many promi
nent people were present. The
teachers in the literary department,
who are E. S. Bollinger, Supt., and
Miss M. J. McFuddew, and Miss
Pearl Scott in the musical depart
ment have a hard year's work be
hind them, and certainly can feel
proud of the result of their labors.
The Journal always gladly -lends
aid to promote a frieudly interest
in these institutions that may prop
erly bo called Oregon's infant in
dustries. It is with especial pleas
ure thai it chronicVs the successful
work of Mr. and Mrs. Bollinger in
charge of this institution. They
have worked hard and deterve credit
for the good lesults achieved
under difficulties.

There were recitations by Frank
Tumbo, "The Holidays;" Thomas
Wineset, "Turn to the Right;" J. II.
Redmino, "The Boy to the School
master;" Juno Dickinson, "The
Bright Side;" Mary Roberts, "The
Loved aud the Lost;" Edward
Chapman, "Comical Recitations;"
Nancy Atkinson, "No Sect in
Heaven;" Josie Watkins, "Socrates
Snooks." The speakers showed
good preparation and excellent do

Johnny Foley is so well known as
a vocalist that he is always welcome
before a Salem audience and he has
made progress, in spite of the fact
that he is almost a musical prodigy
by nature. Mies Atkintou's organ
solo was rendered with expredflon
Miss Josie Watkins' piano playing
was grand. There were quartets,
piano solos, duet on pianos and har
monica, vocal boIos, and duets, in
all an agreeable proof that In this
department Miss Scott has rendered
valuable (service. Two pupils who
were quite proficient in this depart
ment as well as in the literary are
very much missed Freddie Cross of
Oregon City whoso health failed
early in the spring, and Amy Dod
son, of Eastern Orogon, who died
March 10. Few can realize how
much music means to the blind and
the sweet voices of the absent ones
were much missed.

One of the most novel features of
the program was the reading of a
thoughtful original essay by Miss
Hattlo S. Carothers. The piano
solo, "The Feast of the Roses," by
Badio Rristow was a bnllliaut execu
tion. Miss Josio Watkins in "Soc
rates Snooks" showed as great a
humorist herself as Mr. Chapman,
and they are both superior to many
of the travelling elocutionists.

Why He Was Not Returned as
Sherman's Deputy.
Editor Jeurnal: As a reply to
your "Shernian tally" in yesterday's
issue I will say that if as you say,
Sherman is all right, then when
you very properly denounced the
construction of the piers of the "big
bridge" Sherman applied to you the
mild epithet of G d fool, aud
other profane names that would fill
the space devoted to him yesterday,
and perhaps that was all right. Aud
as you alluded to myself, will say
that if I had been retained as dep
uty by 8. and at the same time
engaged to adjust Mr. Babcock's
accounts aud discovering the numer
ous discrepancies and evidences of
dishonesty, it would have been my
duty aud I would have resigned the
position and exposed the dishonesty
of Sherman.
And now you propose with a few
others to reward him for his dis
honesty, vulgarity, profanity and
treachery. The young men he has
employed are what you describe
them to be no doubt, and I thii.'k of
sulllcient good seuse and judgment
uot to be conupted by tiieir em

of John Knight for sheriff. He is
entitled to your vote because he is a
fair, honest, hard-working citizen.
