Almost every railroad company has a device or motto which ia print ed on tho time table folders, the let ter heads and the iBuminated cards that hang on walls of station, wait injf room and business office. These dovices are usually printed in colors, and somo of them are quaint and clever. Ono of tho most familiar is the autumn tinted maple leaf, the mam arteries of which denfrnate tho rtrato of the Chicago, St Paul and ausas City railway, which is popu Iarlv known as the 'Maple Leaf." A three leaf clover is tho distinguish-, ing tnark of the Toledo. St Louis ' and Kansas City road, which is com monly called tho "Clover Route." j Tho Houston and 'lexas central railway has about as elaborate a de sign as any. Its main feature is a steel oolon.d horseshoe bearing the name of the road. Encircled by the shoe Li a green four leaf clover rest ing on a background of red, and con necting the heels of tho shoe is a rab bit's foot labeled "Lucky Route." To tho right just above the horseshoe appears a lono star. Tho four leaf clover is also the device of the Rome. Watertown and Ogdensburg road, each leaf bearing a letter, as "R. W. & O." The long stem of the clover cuts lengthwise through the French word "Bonheur," conveying assur ance of good luck. Jay Gould's Missouri Pacific road has a largo red seal, crossed by a rail road track, with the name of die road in black letters covering the entire faco of the seaL The heraldic stamp of tho Wabash road i3 a red flag vrith a black center, in which appears the forward end of a locomotive, the headlight flashing the word "Wa bash." The Lehigh Valley fhu a red pennant with a diamond Bhaiicd cen ter of black, upon which are the let ters "L. V." in white. One of the simplest of these adver tising devices is that of the Pennsyl vania railroad, which is a small red keystone with the words "Pennsyl vania Lines" across its face. The Florida Central and Peninsular rail road prints upon its time tables a red shield, upon which appears tho front of a locomotive, tho trunk of an ele phant dangling from tho headlight, encircling which are the words, in red letters, "Florida Trunk Line." The Georgia Southern and Florida railroad has for its uavice a shield printed in dark tints. On tho lower surface of the shield Ls a picturesque scenic view showing a railroad train CTO&dng a stream on a long iron bridge. Just above the picturo are the words "Suwanee River Route to Florida." The Richmond aud Dan ville Railroad company contents it self with tho oddly designed initials "R. and D." speared by an arrow and printed in bright red. A yellow disk on a black squaro constitutes tho trade mark of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad, the letters "B. O." ap pearing on the yellow disk on each side of the faintly traced picture of a monument A most peculiar dovico is that which the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific railroad has clung to for a great many years. It is an oblong open spaco, with a red disk at tho left, laboled "The Great Rock Island Route." Occupying tho greater part of tho space are the words in big, black lottors, "A Man," and crowd ing close upon tho letter "A" is the diminutive figure of a man with a stick over his shoulder and a satchel in his hand. Tho device of tho Erie railway in lioth simplo and familiar. It is a black disk on a tinted square, the faco of tin disk liearing in white letters tho words, "Erie Lines." An Indian arrowhead, Bhowing tho words "Tntnpico Routo," is tho distinguishing stamp of tho Monte rey and Mexican Gulf railway. Now York Times. Tho Loyal Highlander. The Highlanders are loyal to Scot tish genius. Sir Walter Scott while making a tour of tho western High lands, wrote to tho innkeeper of Ar roquhar, Loch Long, to havo rooms prepared for him. On tho appointed day it rained cctselessly. As Scott drew near tho iun, ho was met on tho hill near tho houso by tho landlord, who, with bared head and backing overy yard as Scott advanced, thus addressed him: "Gudo guid us, Sir Walter! This Ls just nwfu'l Sic ana downpour 1 Was ovor tho likof I really beg your pardon! I'm sure it's no fault o' mino. I canna think how it should happen to rain this way, just as you, o' u' men of tho warld, should como to seo us. It looks nmnist personal I I can only say, for my part, I'm just ashamed o' the weather 1" Youth's Companion. Florida Shad. COLONEB J. OLMSTED. Liberty Street Slourt'e dtowlfttir or ItmramrnU. Scarcely an instrument in tho or chestra cK-aied Mozart's attention. A born vwunist. he wrote concerti for violin and orchestra which. tUough iTi.Viut tho emotional ele ment of L' 'iboven and Spoor, are greatly pneL To the tenor violin, which bad been deemed worthy only of filling up tuiti passages, he gave a voice and place of its own in the or chestra. The clarionet was raised to great importance by him, and forth with took place as a favorite solo in strument In nearly all his scores it received especial attention; while tho fresh, beautiful, and exceedingly masterful work, the quintet in A major for clarionet and strings, and the fine clarionet concerto, which he composed for Stadler. havo imparted to tho instrument an all age reputa tion which can never be impaired. Then his sparkling genius spent it self in writing for that fine reed in strument the basset horn, the splen did properties of which ho deemed more suitable than even the clarionet for his "Requiem." For the oboe Mozart did much, according it a prominence which it had never reached with any previous composer. His Opus 103 has a rare oboe part, and in the mass "No. 12" is tome fine if difficult music for it Black wood's Magazine. A WbUtllnc LangTi-jge. It seems that there is really a whistling language. A French trav eler. M. Lajard. has written a work on the subject which has been ocxu pying the attention of the Pary Academy of Sciences. It is in the Canary inlands that people whistle instead of s;xikuig when they hold converse with each other. Nor is the whistling language a mere Ian guage of conventional wmuds. It is composed of words, as it were, like any other language, and the mhab itants of the Canary islands attain great proficiency in it so that they can converse on all Forts of subjects. Tho whistling noise is produced by placing two fingers inside the mouth. M. Lajard declares that the Ian guage has a great affinity with Span ish. He has jotted some of it down in a sort of mumcal notation, and it Ls found that any sentence lias exactly, onosyllable more than thoequivalent sentence in Spanish, the extra sound being accounted for by tho fact that tho first syllable serves as a mere ex planation designed to attract tho at tention of the person addi-esed. M. Lajard learned enough of the lan guage to converse to a certain extent with tho natives. London Tele graph. Letting Temper lion It Coumo.
