Investigation and admissions of the superintendent of construction in charge for contractors, shows tlmt the middle pier is aeuling and that the tall pier has swayed about twelve Inches to the east. It ap pears fmm the statement of the diver, who examined tne struc ture under water Sunday, that the piling is being forced up through the grillage by the weight of the pisr. All this indicates that a general Ignorance of the work undertaken prevails, and that the. taxpayers have not had the benefit J of such supervision In their lutereat I bb the construction of a steel bridge should require. The piers us con structed will not sustain their own weight, much less tba enormous pre-sureofn steel super-structure. It is time for the county courts to call a halt, cancel the contract, which can now by no means bei safely carried out, and sue upou the lioud, to recover the $15,000 already paid on the coutruct. It would teach such contractors a salutary lesson and uili;ut cheok them iu undertaking contracts which they do not seem to be able to manage. The damage to the city and the two counties is already great. The pres ent duty is to protect the taxpayers against ftrtber loss and suffering of Inconvenience. interviews with citieknb. Mr. A. Bush, bunker: "My ideas about the bridge were set forth iu the report made by Messrs. D'Arcy, Byars and myself. I have favored and still do something permanent and devoid of jobbery. -A steel sus pension bridge if rightly built would be the thing." A ousines man: "The contractors do uot seem lo know the weight of their piers, or the crushing point of the timlier upon which they rest, to say nothing of the character of the bottom of the river." E. M. Waite: "I think the first pier ought uot to be accepted, under any condition, as it has already proven defective, and that before the city and couuty do any thing further, they aught to know wheth er the bondsmen are good -fan alH these losses aud delays. Any body can contract to build a bridge, but to erect a good, safe and substantial one, requires experience at least. V are paying a large sum or money, and Salem certaluly cannot afford to bare any failure through neglect or incompetency this time." (j. B. Miller, f Gervais, says: ewaniaguMi uriuir. i vm uau not hammer this subject too lutrd to We want a cood bridge. Yo can suit us. We want your paper to( stand by the interests of the people." Commissioner Watson, of Turner, is in the city, nnd feels rather blun about the bridge matter. Robert Find saya it is not the fault of the contractors. J.J. Murphy: "It is a bad piece of busiueas, and will cause the peo ple mueh incouvenieuca aud ex pense." Mr. Boethby: "The work on thai pier Is faulty in design oi faulty in construction. Just who is to blame cauuoi yei oe ueieruuueu. A brother to one of thecontractnrs, rtupt. Bates, said tu a journal muti: "The piers are settliug right along. We have a gauge ou I he central per.
