Horaco Holdcn Subjected to Unheard of Sufferings Among tlio Ilarlmrous I'eleiv Islanders. UHAITEK VI. We had not proceeded far before wo had reason for regretting that wo had entered upon tho perilous un dertaking of navigating the waters of that region in boats so poorly a Inpted to the purposes we had in view. There came on a violent storm of rain, tho wind blowing hard, and tho waves threatening to swallow us each moment of the night. To our dismay, the rudder of tho canoe, owing to tlio imperfect manner in which it had lieen con structed, was unshipped, and for a tltno tlio destruction of those on board seemed Inevitable. Fortu nately wc continued to keep com pany. 15y great exertion we made out to rcplaco tho rudder in the morning, and then proceeded. In the course of the day tho rudder was again unshipped; but, with less diniculty thnn before, we succcded in fastening it to its place with ropes, bo that It answeicd tolerably well as a substitute for a better one. Hap py would it have been for us, If this had been tho worst of tho disaster of nor vovn'c. Our mast next went by tho board; and during the whole of tho next night, we lay diilting at tlio mercy of the winds and waves. In tho meantime the canoe sprung a leak, and wo found It Impossible to ball out the water as fast as It came in. In this extremity we lost no tiino in shilling all our lading Into nnu end ortho canoe; and by tearing up our old clothes nudHtulling them Into tlio crack, wo at length stopped tho leak. I n this sad plight w e con tinued on, meeting with no serious accident till tho fifth day from (ho timo of leaving the island; when, Just at thu netting of tho sun, owing to some mismanagement, a ngtit puiT of wind (Mpsied tlio canoe. Koi Innately no one was drowned. All but tlnco swam to our bout; thojo who lenmlned continued through tho night to cling to the canoe. With great dllllculty wo kept our boat fiom being stove In pieces by coming in contact with thu canoe. Dining all this tlmu It rained very hard and never had wo experienced so dismal a night. In tho morning wo tiicd to got tho ca noo right side up; but finding that Impossible, wo concluded to aban don It entirely. Wo took fiom it a few cocoanuts, and ns our last resin t, all took refugo in the boat. We saved the compass and mil not so much regret tho loss of the canoe, as It had ahcady caused us an incalcu lable amount uf anxiety, toll and suH'erliig. Hut new dlllluultlcs now stared us in tlio face. Most of our provisions had been lost by tho up- sottlug of the canoe and wo had but n very small quantity of water. It was theiefoie deemed expedient to divide among us tho means of sub sistence remaining. Wo had four cocoa-nuts for each pcison, am) a few pieces over, which were distributed cipially. All tills time no objects weio seen, except a few sea bltds. Wu continued In this condition for nine days and nights, with actual starvation before ns, us the most probablw end of our anxieties and sullerlngs. We were about s-ettlitig down Into a state of continued des pair, when, to our Inexpressible Joy, wo discovered land apparently about ten miles oil". We exerted all our remaining utrcugth to reach It. When within six miles wo saw, ap proaching us, a licet of eighteen canoes, tilled with the natives of tho small Island we were approaching. At tlrst the small canoes came near us, for the purpose of ascertaining who and what we were. The ap pearance of these natives was such as to exdto at onco our astonish ment and disgust, hike the In habitants of tho island we had left, thoy were entirely nuked; and, as our subisjueiit exivrletice proved, the, were Infinitely more barbarous and cruel, Very mkui the largoeanoos came up, when tho wietches coin meneeil their outmgns. They attacked Us with brutal fe nnity, knocking us overboard with their clulw, In the meantime iu;ik lujt the most frightful gi'.umees, and yelling like so many Incarnate dev lis. They fell upon mr l ai and Immediately de-try.l It, hrvukui It Into splinters, and taking t'u fragments Into thu muoes. Whl.e tin was going otr we were bw Un tiling from one cunoo to the other, entreating tlicni by olgus to sparo our lives and permit us to get into their canoe-i. "I his they for a long time rvftiMsl, heating us met un mercifully, whenever wo caught hold of anything to sxvo outvvhea from linking. After t! ey htal tUmolUintl our boat, and kept us in that condition for some time, they allowed U3 to get on board. They then compelled us to row towards the land. They stripped us of nil our clothlngiinme diately after we were taken in; and tlio reader may form some idea of our distro9 in this condition, under a burning sun, from tho fact that before night our shoulders were blistered by being thus exposed to the heat. On upproachlng land we discovered no habitation; but after going round a point of tho Island, we saw near the beach a row of small and badly constructed huts We wero compelled to jump from tho canoes Into tho water nnd wade to the shore. Uy this time the beach was lined with women and chltdren, who caused the air to resound with the most horrid yells nnd screams. Their gestures nnd violent contor tions of countenance resembled the frantic ravings of Bedlamites. Tlio reception wc met with on land was no more agreeable than that upon the water. Judging from the treatment we had received from the females of the island which we had left. It was hoped that the gentle sex would ex tend to us some proof of their com miseration; but in this wo wero sad ly disappointed. If possible, they were more cruel than their inhumnn lords and masters. Wo were soon Bcparated from each other, and .dragged about from place to place; our brutal captors, in the meantime, pnnlniiilltii; with each other to seo who should have us as his property. Freoucnt contests of this kind oc curred; in one of which, during the first day, I was knocked down. The question of ownership was at length settled, aud we were ri'tnlned bv thoo into whose hands we had at first fallen. Some of us were taken to their.houso of worship, called by them Verrc-Yar-ris literally, God's house where they went through with some of their lcllgious ceremonies!, nnd we lecelved a few moulhfuls of food, which was the first wo had tasted thiough the day. It was my good foi tune to be retained by one who, computed with the other natives, was humane. His name was Pah rahbooah; the female head of the family was called Wnhhlt; and they had four children. I went by the name of Teemit; and Itnnliinilii Note bv the name of Hollo. The enptain was also fortu nate in falling Into ;he hands of a friend of my master, who treated him with comparative kindness. Jlo was valued the more highly nlso on account of being a largo fleshy limn thoy judging of these things by the sie and appearance. (io nuco.vn.NUKn.NKXT satukdav.) An Amnio Anoloiry.
