We had not proceeded far before
wo had reason for regretting that wo

dertaking of navigating the waters
of that region in boats so poorly

view. There came on a violent
storm of rain, tho wind blowing
hard, and tho waves threatening to
swallow us each moment of the
night. To our dismay, the rudder
of tho canoe, owing to tlio imperfect
manner in which it had lieen con
structed, was unshipped, and for a

board seemed Inevitable. Fortu
nately wc continued to keep com

out to rcplaco tho rudder in the
morning, and then proceeded. In
the course of the day tho rudder
was again unshipped; but, with less
diniculty thnn before, we succcded
in fastening it to its place with ropes,

had been tho worst of tho disaster of

by tho board; and during the whole

It was theiefoie deemed expedient to
divide among us tho means of sub
sistence remaining. Wo had four
cocoa-nuts for each pcison, am) a few
pieces over, which were distributed

weio seen, except a few sea bltds.

nine days and nights, with actual
starvation before ns, us the most
probablw end of our anxieties and

When within six miles wo saw, ap

discovered no habitation; but after

we saw near the beach a row of small
and badly constructed huts

was lined with women and chltdren,
who caused the air to resound with
the most horrid yells nnd screams.
Their gestures nnd violent contor
tions of countenance resembled the
frantic ravings of Bedlamites. Tlio

no more agreeable than that upon the
water. Judging from the treatment
we had received from the females of
the island which we had left. It was
hoped that the gentle sex would ex
tend to us some proof of their com
miseration; but in this wo wero sad
ly disappointed. If possible, they
were more cruel than their inhumnn
lords and masters. Wo were soon

our brutal captors, in the meantime,

length settled, aud we were

they went through with some of

computed with the other natives,
was humane. His name was Pah
rahbooah; the female head of the
family was called Wnhhlt; and
they had four children. I
