A Train of Tliirly Cars Can ll .Moved line Hundred .Miles for G. I have slated the avoiago cost of moving trains throughout the United States, Including every pos sible expense, to hc$17.0i,r less, per 100 miles, or $V2T for 3,000 miles. The icports of the Pennsylvania rail load company show (hat the average cost of moving "trains 100 miles, over that road, was $10.-18 In lMi-r, and in 1881 had been i educed to $0.02 per 100 miles." The Ameri can Society of Civil Fnglneers which embraces the most eminent civil engineers anil railway builders in Anietien slate that "the reasons for the i educed cost In railway trans portation of late ycais, are improve ments In the condition of railroads by better construction, better main tenance of track, and in more economical administration; aKo in the increased amount of freight haul ed on one train, which b made possi ble by (ho Increase in locomotive power and In the capacity of cars. The train-load has Increased about 7.r per cent. Tho capacity of cars In creased from UO.OOO pounds, In 18.V5, to 1S7H, to 10,000 pounds in 1882, and to f0,000 pounds In 188.1, and tho master car builders have recently decided upon .1 'stniidard' ear to carry 00,000 pounds." The above remarks aro taken from addresses read before the American society of civil engineers at their con ventlou, Juno 2.,, 18ST, by K. Sweet and K. I,. Corthol, members of that society. I have stated that the Uni ted States government could move freight, at a prollt, at 1-2 a cent per ton u mile, that Is at ." mills, or o-10 or.lO-lOOof a cent, and for thai, and similar assertions, I have ken called a crank by people Ignorant of (he the cost of transportation by steam. ! of work already done, and improve ments already being made by roads. These; estimates include every ex pense that can lie charged under the present sistem of operadon pursued by greedy and competing corpora tions. These expenses can be large ly reduced when the government owns and operates tho railways of of America and all roads arc very greatly improved. Now, let us apply this statement of thecniiiientcnglneers to (he pass enger department of (lie transporta tion service. The distance from San Francisco to New York is about 2, &"0 miles; at fO.02 per 100 miles, a train would $171.50. Say i( is .1,000 miles, and cost $0 per 100 miles or 0 cents per mile it would then cos( flfeO. Any day that the government, or any other responsible manager advertises the railway ready to carry passengers "Overland for 1 00,' their trains to and from both (he Atlantic and I'aeillc coasts will be crowded from every port where there is a railroad station. There will be no lack of business to till 100 cars per train daily, oroftener both ways. A passenger coach seats sixty persons, and ten such coaches will curry, with comfort, ease and great speed, (100 persons. Kadi one paying .91 will aggiegate ?000 for the passengers alone not counting any extra charges for telegrams, baggage, sleepers, hotel or other ears for pas sengers v. ho choose to pay extr.i for more or net tcr accomodations. Then we have on such a train, receipts $000, and probably much more less cost of moving train, every ex pes no included, $180, giving us a profit for the government amounting to $-120 on each train. With these light before us, I think wo are safe in continuing to asset t that the government could carry people, at a imillt, "Overland l'or$l," and we shall "light it out on I bat Hue" if it takes a lifetime.
