SCHOOLS ARE IN A CRISIS Schools o f the nation are involved in an un precedented crisis that has developed from a oenes of economic and financial conditions and the Nyssa school system is no exception. increase in population and the migration to the west have flooded colleges and universities and preparatory schools with great numbers o f youngsters and low wages paid teachers have reduced the size o f faculties to a critically low number. The condition in the colleges and universities has been aggravated by the G. I. bill o f rights under which many veterans are being educated. Nyssa is faced with a school building pro gram that must be undertaken soon to accomo date the students who will be ready to entei school next fall. The program should be devel oped on a long-time basis and not as a tempor ary expedient because in a veiy few years the district would again be called on to undertake another patch-work project. Building costs are high now, discouraging building to some ex tent, but interest rates, which a public body usually has to pay because o f methods o f public financing, are now low. The Nyssa school board has used good judg ment in securing the services of an expert tc study the Nyssa situation with a view o f giving advice on construction o f buildings both now* and in the future. Residents o f the district should inform themselves so far as possible o the situation and be prepared to make a decis ion, because in the final analysis the money must be provided by the taxpayers, if they ap prove the program.
