Things About Nyssa’s Shops
Into the near offing, on fact, on
Sunday May 11, comes Mother's Day.
A day set aside when the nation will
pause to remember the woman who
in great love and unending devotion
loved and reared her sons and
daughters. It is mete and right so to
do and we will be among the millions
w ho will honor our own little mother
who to us has ever seemed as beaut­
iful and sweet as in those long ago
days when we thought no other little
girl’s mother could pcsslbly have
such beautiful long and shinny black
hair.
But one thing that burns up Is this
idea of picturing motherhood and
all motheis as decrprepit and out
moded old ladies with one foot in
the grave and the other on a ban­
ana peel. Whistler's painting of his
mother is a dandy but with such
resignation of mind and soul as he
depicted representing with all moth­
erhood is dipressing. Mrs. Wlilster is
o f another era.
Today mother, regardless of her
age is very apt to be out on a golf
course or in the throes of getting
the latest whing ding in permanents.
One mother we know, in fact she is
a grandmother, keen of intellect,
cultured and educated. Yet she told
us just last year that she had been
too busy to attend a party because
she had been driving tractor all that
week. Kathleen Norris has done a
pretty good job of mothering, yet
she has managed to reach the height
of writing and during the last cam­
paign for President did a neat job
of
radio campaigning. Eleanor
Roosevelt takes time now and then
from her busy days to pay heed to
the children she has borne and rais­
ed. Yet who would dream, of stick­
ing a white cap on our first lady's
head and with her hands folded re­
signation of the past generations of
motherhood paint her picture.
Let there be a Mother’s Day and
let every mother's son and daughter
pay her honor, if away, send her a
letter or telegram or both and a
present that is gay and frivolous and
love her more than ever but do let
us take her off that pedestal that’s
half saint and half Imbecile and let
her be to us a real person, with
real life and thoughts and loves and
desires.
A women who just because she
happens to be called “mother'' by
some one is still human and very
much of this earth and wants to be
one of us not above us. Let us get
to know them better and under­
stand them more. Then instead of
setting aside one day a year to sort
of worship her and then forget and
go on our selfish way the other three
hundred and sixty-four days, let us
