U s in g H o n e y I-O-N IS A BUSINESS PRO PO SITIO N FOR EASTERN OREGON— w E wish to call attention to an editorial pub- . . lished in the Caldwell News-Tribune re cently and re-published in this issue of The Gate City Journal. As mentioned in the News-Tribune, the false idea is advanced that Portland is the market for much of the products o f this territory, which is not true. , This theory is advanced by western Oregon as an argument against the I-O-N highway. Sen ator McNary’s recent stand against the highway is another indication of what western Oregon thinks o f the new road. As a matter of fact, the completion of the I-O-N will mean thousands of dollars to Eastern Oregon, and as more lands on the Owyhee come into bearing, it will mean additional thousands. The I-O-N is principally a business road. It will not have the attraction to the tourists that other roads have, for example; The Columbia High way. But it will mean a great deal to this part of the country. It will be used by business men, and by some tourists, who are interested in going to California by the shortest route. It will be used by countless trucks, hauling produce to Calif ornia markets; products that cannot be sold some years because of there being no margin left after paying freight charges. A large part of the I-O-N is already completed with only 35 miles of bad road remaining on the route, but it is said that this 35 miles is very bad and an ordinary car will require three hours to negotiate it. The balance o f the road is in good shape, and motorists can make good time travel ing this route. There would be plenty of traffic over the road if the entire route was finished, and Oregon seems to be the one holding up the procession. It is true that Oregon has made some progress on the road, but Idaho and Nevada have their part practically complete. The County Court fought hard for this road, and have made won- ,u£r ivercome the op op- derful progress. Thev had to overcome vestem Oregon, position o f practically :N a and now Senator " McNary says, “ The road would contribute little to Oregon’s development and Oregon should not be forced into contributing to its construction until more important highways are being finished.'' Senator McNary has always been a pretty good booster for this part of the country and was one of the prime movers in getting the Owyhee project started. He has been behind legislation to the benefit of folks of this territory, which only makes his latest statement, if he has been quoted correctly, come like a bolt from the blue sky.
