Mr. and Mrs. Briton Morris had the misfortune to have their home catch on fire. No apparent serious damage resulted however. Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Johnson and family motored to Clatskanie, arriving back in Camp Saturday of last week. S. C. Cook, Roy Cook, Swen Westerberg and Donald Cook mo tored to Banks last Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. B. W. Borton and boys returned from Turner from their week’s trip during the holi days, enjoying a visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. I. F. Bor ton at Amity then visited Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Harlan and daughter, Loree. The Bortons and Harlans all visited Mr. Harlan’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Har lan, and Mr. Borton’s brothers, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Borton and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Borton. Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Oathes and children, Katherine, Stanley David and Ronald moved from Portland to Camp McGregor Jan uary 2. He will work out of Camp Olson. The Oathes are cousins of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Philips. Mrs. Emmn Sliffe left for Port land Monday where she will visit her mother, Mrs. Mary Moore and also receive medical attention. The O-A bridge crew, headed by Adolph Nelson, returned to work Wednesday. e The National Office of Vital Statistics recently stated that, based on 1946 figures, life ex pectancy of the white male is now 65 years, the woman 70 years. Unemployment Payments Up Unemployment insurance to Ore gon’s covered workers reached $1,- 113,109 in December for the highest monthly figure since April, 1946, but the year’s payments of $7,- 744,168 were $8,367 lower than in 1947 and less than half the 1946 record total of over 16 millions, the unemployment compensation com mission reports. Readjustment allowances to un employed veterans also rose con siderably last month to $562.677, but here again the 1948 tot? I of $5,134,740 failed by $847,602 to reach the previous year’s figure. December's payments of $1,- 675,786 to civilians and veterans was 27.3 per cent higher than the combined figure for December, 1947. It more than doubled the $764.932 paid in November, 1948. Checks went out to 17,147 civi lians and 8,370 veterans during the last week of the old year as com pared to 8,160 civilians and 3,141 veterans just five weeks before. A year ago checks went to 8,414 civilians and 4.122 veterans, while two years ago the comparable figures were 6,570 and 6,771. Filing of 16,489 new claims last month established a new record since the July-to-June benefit year went into effect in 1947. The commission now has 53.929 claims on file as against 42,387 a year ago. In December, 1947, only 7,559 new claims were re ceived. • Radium used in med cine has a 2,000 year life.
