TILLAMOOK HEADLIGHT, NOVEMBER 26, 1008. SANDLAKE Editorial Snap Shots. Bea booster, and boost the new Port Of Tillamook Commission, which is to be elected by the people next month. » « • We wonder whether the news of the arrival of that package at Pawnee City. Neb., has been received in this city, « • * The bootleggers, too. ought to be very thankful today that they are not having their Thanksgiving dinner in the county jail. ' » » n A large number of dairymen will soon catch on. The recent butting in of the special interests is only another instance of their rule or ruin tactics. * w * We wonder who will be the next bevy of business men to see their slocks go up in smoke on account of drunken carou seis at the back of business houses? » » « Now who is morally guilt for the fire : The fellow who had the blind pig, those who caroused there, or the peace officers for allowing that rotten state of affairs to exist ? « * » Tillamook Citv business men and pro perty o vners <»ught to be thankful this Thanksgiving «hat the good-fur nothing class did not burn the entire city. They came near doing it though. tt * * Where is the vigilance committee that notified Peters to leave town on account of his immoral conduct ? Go a step fur ther, gentlemen, and prepare a rope for the parties who fired the city. * * M Isn’t it time to take the bull by the horns ? Nearly half a million dollars' worth of property was in jeopardy the morning of the fire, for nothing could have 9«ved the biiMties- portion of the city had .there been a wind. But the lawbreakers, who wcic undoubtedly in st« omental in starting the fire, do not care a tinker’d cuss whether the town was burned up * * * No one expected that the special inter ests newspaper would have much to sav about the spiriting away of Eva Wolfe, the clever work of Sheriff Crenshaw and the return of the girl to this city. Nor did it publish the letter written bv Wolfe which pro veil the conspiracy to defeat justice. Oh. no, it wouldn't be right to expose the people who control that sheet. Hence its silence. * * W There in no doubt but what the fire in this city was caused by the lawless ele ment In view of that fact and the p‘»ssi bility of a repetition of the same thing at any time, it is about time that busi ness men and property owners took an interest in the affairs of the city bv electing a mayor and city council who wdl rid the city of the born drunks and loafers and bootleggers. * < * Some people say you can’t st op boot legging That kind of argument will not hohl water. Whenever the county and city aii|0lorities get a tew of them in the coun with a big fine a. well, then thatjAi iud of medicine will soon make tlicWrei respect the law It is no use being too chicken liearied. Let both the city and county official» keep huey from now on and impose tlie heavic.t fine and imprisonment upon the law breaker«, it will soon put a atop to it. Not before * * * What'« the use of keep chewing the rag about Geo. Chamberlain tor United Slate» Senator He made a democratic Hanoi himself when he got booxed at the Astoria regatta, disgracing him«ell, dis gracing and dragging down the office ol governor to the gutter, and disqualify ing hiinscll lor the United States senate. Just imagine what Statement No. 1 re publican« are up against by pledging themselves to something that is believed to be unconstitutional. « » a Again we want to imprest upon th* voters of Tillamook City the necessity of live business men tortlu the affairs of the city, men who have «cm- moral back bone and who will strive to make this a decent, orderly, law-abiding, wideawake business city That is the kind of repu tation that the city is sadly in need ol The city has been mnde a rendezvous by u number of lawless individuals, who. no doubt, were the cause ol the fire, and if that will not arouse the business men. • who, thanks to the hose company, were not all burned out. to activity and a demand that they lie routed out. we do not know what will When the bust ness men realize how t lose thev came ot being all burned out on account of a drunken carousel, it seems to us. for mutual protection, that they ah mid get together and demand that citv offitmls be elected who are) ledgvd to rid the citv of the undesirable class lor they mm cause a repetition ot the fire at any time. « a • We had an Idea that the voters in Fair view and South PmirU precinct* did not understand oi ha<l been n i<dn formed al-out the fort of T»llxm<»ok Comm « sion A report is being ciroiiktM tlmt It is tu help pay the city'* indebtedness It is nothing of the kind, for it will be in dependent of city affairs. One of the principal obj.cls in view mln give tlw center of the county a deep water port, nod lb.se w ho are trying to accvniphsh this have adopted the best, fairest and equitable war to bring thw about It IS just as important for Fairview and South Prairie as it w for Hoquarton and Tdla nook precincts to have a deep water port, for It will be of mutual ben* FOR A DEEP WATER refit to all, especially land owners. For 1 that reason we hope the four precincts i will join bands for an improvement that I is of vital importance to this section of the county. HARBOR. « « * The way to ruin the reputation and lower the price of Tillamook cheese is to | keep on publishing articles like that which appeared in the Herald last week That will fix it, good and plenty. But here are the facts. A car load of cheese, made up of shipments from several of the factories, wa» »ent to Los Angeles, but, unfortunately, the cheese was a long time in transit, and when it arrived there one small hatch Irom one factory, had become a little monldv. The loss on that account wa» very trifling. Anyone who will magnify a trivial affair like that and proclaim it to the world that the reputation of Tillamook cheese is ruined tor th» next three years, is doing the dairy industry of this county a great deal of harm. But that is what the Herald is doingin its attempt to butt in. What about the tons upon ton» of splen •lid cheese manufactured at the large co operative factories ’ Oh. no. not a word about that. The object is to drag down the reputation ot lhe large factories and place ii 111 a grade wnh the small amount ol fwior cheese. When a box oi apples or erate of st< a w beri ms go bad on account of being so long it transit, no one hears of the Hood River newspapers 'knock ing" those industries. Whv then all this ‘'knocking'' the dairy industry because one small shipment of Tillamook cheese did not reach its destination in |ierfect condition ? Keep the "knocking" up— the jobbers will be the gainers and the dairymen of this county the losers BAR IMPROVEMENTS. Predicts that Tillamook Bay willBecome the Lar gest Lumber Producing Port in the World. It is gratifying to know that the tim her ownersere to make an effort for the improvement of Tillamook Bar at the coining session of the national legisla ture, and, if possible, to secure an appro priation for that purpose, as will be seen bv a letter received from Mr Ru - sell Hawkins, representing The W hitue* Co.. Ltd., and addressed to the people of Tillamook County. The improve ment of the bar is no new problem to He dealt with, for the Headlight has often, the past ten years, discussed every phase of the question from the great timber resources of the county to that of the immense lumber producing dis trict this will become when the bar is improved, and with the fact that the government is in possession of the sur vey, plans and cost for the improvement of the bar. All this was not obtained without some effort and hard work, but it seems that the people were doomed to disappointments at times when it looked us though the project would lie approver! and appropriation made. Whenever the Engineer ill this district recommended the improvement, the Board of Engineers at II arhington turned down the project by making reports that the present com merce of the port did not justify tlie ex penditure or tlmt Tillamook bar »■»« so near the Columbia river to undertake the construction of another jetty. The last report is that the commerce of the l*ort did not justify the expenditure. We have show 11 again and »gain lhere is no logic in such re|«ort, for it is the pros pective commerce |of the port which should l>e a determining point, for to lottie up an immense amount of timber and other resources, with no way of get ting it out, looks to us the height ot ah. surdity to say that the present commerce of the port does not justify the expen II tine. And it is these reports wInch w ill tie found tlie greatest obstacles to over come, with the veto of the Boaid of En gineers attached to It, so if anything is accomplished in the next session of the legislature it will have to be done by insisting upon the Rivers and Harbors Committee placing an item in the rivers and harbors bill for a sufficient amount of money to c instruct the south jetty. This is where, in our judgment, a strong fight should tie made and would over ride th There the till tier re ths e thia t who I reeou mend! bar wl a repo we ex 4 of Tills heart 11 in tliel fo. t|J Will be of Great Benefit to the Center of County.
