NOVEMBER 19, 1908 • Early Saturday morning Homer Craig, the cook at the Allen House, went to the shed to get some kindbng to light the fire. It was dark at the time, and he espied a man crouched down. The cook took no notice of him and went back to the hotel for the purpose of procuring his revolver. As he came from the hotel the second time be saw the man coming from the shed with n sack on bis back. The cook fired, but unfortunately missed its mark. The man dropped the bag of cabbage he was making off with, and refusing to obey the command to stop the cook took another shot at the man as he disap peared in the darkness, Virgil Donaldson had a close call on Monday, lie was taking what he thou ght to be some patent medicine, but instead of doing so he was taking aeon ite, and had swallowed down about an ounce and a hall of the poison before be was aware of the mistake he had made. The poison immediately took effect and he came near dying. His brother came to town for a doctor, who met Dr. Ross and he hastened to the Donaldson place, and Dr. Smith having been notified to hasten there with a stomach pump, the two doctors succeeded in preventing the poison from proving fatal to the young man. _________________ I1.50 per year.
