Early Saturday morning Homer Craig,
the cook at the Allen House, went to the
shed to get some kindbng to light the fire.
It was dark at the time, and he espied a
man crouched down. The cook took no
notice of him and went back to the hotel
for the purpose of procuring his revolver.
As he came from the hotel the second
time be saw the man coming from the
shed with n sack on bis back. The cook
fired, but unfortunately missed its mark.
The man dropped the bag of cabbage he
was making off with, and refusing to
obey the command to stop the cook took
another shot at the man as he disap
peared in the darkness,
Virgil Donaldson had a close call on
Monday, lie was taking what he thou
ght to be some patent medicine, but
instead of doing so he was taking aeon
ite, and had swallowed down about an
ounce and a hall of the poison before be
was aware of the mistake he had made.
The poison immediately took effect and
he came near dying. His brother came
to town for a doctor, who met Dr. Ross
and he hastened to the Donaldson place,
and Dr. Smith having been notified to
hasten there with a stomach pump, the
two doctors succeeded in preventing the
poison from proving fatal to the young
man.

Hose Company is in Need
of More Men.
There was a special meeting of the hose
company on Tuesday evening, to which
the business men were invited, the object
being to explain to the latter the need of
more help. This was explained by Mr.
Thoma* Coates, who, by the way, has
stayed with the fire department longer
than anybody and is one of the liest fire
fighter* in the company. He said that the
membership of the company was teiiuced
to about fifteen, which had been brought
about by exemptions and removal from
the city, and to make an efficient com.
