There is at least one candidate in the field, Harvey K. Brown, of Baker City, who stands for all that good citizens should desire ; and a great many people outside of the state who are watching the contest, will hope that the republi can voters of Oregon will have the wis dom to nominate him. He has made a record as an official in Baker that com mends him to all who believe in sterling honesty, in the enforcement «»f the laws, and, generally, in decent discharge of duty by men occupying public posi tions. He is a man of marked ability and great force of character, and he is unwaveringly in favor of those things which tend to strengthen the common wealth and elevate citizenship. • The women of Oregon should take an especial interest in his candidacy, for he not only favors equal suffrage, but stands also for those thing which protect the home. Oregon made a mistake in its last re publican nomination for governor ; it may make another, but it will not fall into error if it select this sterliug man." A STONG ENDORSEMENT. This is an unsafe deduction, ■e companies which have been run ■iefly for the benefit of their leading Hlicials and friends are probably very Mw. And a general housecleaning has ■aken place in those few. Corrupt and Lxtravagant officers have been thrown lout and men who will run the compa nies in the interest of those who pay in the money—that is, in the interest of the policy holders—have been in stalled. A great improvement has been forced in the personnel and the man agement of the big companies. This change, it is likely, will he permanent. Under th« new conditions a policy is worth more in 1906 than it was in 1905, or in any previous year since the grafting began. The man who holds a term policy is likely to realize more on it when it matures than did those whose policies expired in recent times. Th® expenses of running the companies are being lowered. The absurdly large salaries of the heads of the companies and the big commissions allowed to favorites of the insurance chiefs have all been abolished, so fAr as the general •p.ibli chaa learned. The steals of va- iious sorts which seem to have been perpetrated with considerable freedom in the past few years have ended. In the absence of all these drains much larger sums will necessarily be left for division among the policy holders. Pay up your premiums regularly. Hang on to your policies. This is the advice which should lie heeded by every in sured person in the United States. hMHiL A Well Conducted Office. As an evidence of the personal regard and esteem in which Hon. John H. Aitkin is held by the people of Hunting ton, among whom he has resided for the p i8t 18 years, the following resolutions, passed unanimously by the city council l ist Monday night, are most significant and speak in unmistakeable terms of their utmost confidence of his ability and integrity. Resolutions of Confidence. Whereas, our esteemed fellow towns man, Hon. John H. Aitkin, a resident of this city fur the past eighteen years, lias been urged by Ins friends to become a canditale on the Republican ticket for the important office of State Treasurer of Oregon, we, his fellow citizens and neighbors, desire to place ourselves on record as favoring his nomination and election. He has been Mayor of this city and its treasurer five consecutive terms. He is prominent in financial circles and has been the leading merchant of this city all these years. He is one of our most honest and upright citizens ; has always taken great interest in our public schools, and at present is one of our trusted directors. We are confident that bis name will add great strength to the Republican Stale Ticket, therefore, be it Resolved, l'liat we, the city of Hunt ington, do most heartily recommend Hou. John II. Aitkin to the Republicans of Oregon for t he office of State Trea surer, having complete confidence in him, and earnestly endorse his candi dacy. fully convinced tint no aspirant now before the voters of the State is better equipped or more fully qualified to fill this most irnportaut position, his business career in this city during the eighteen years being unimpeachable ; one of strict honesty and integrity.
