Ou the way down we had good bunka and plenty to eat, for the people in Woodburn and Salem gave uh all we wanted to eat and more to«>, also the State gave uh $1.50 to buy with on the I rip down, which we had clear. It is towed by a hawser 16 inches in circumference and 150 fathoms long, connecting with a chain 75 fathoms long al tlie end of the raft. This chain is con- iiected with another chain which rn: s Ihiough the whole length of the raft, and wherever the strain comes on the hawser it pulls ths raft together.
