During the week, or since the destruction
of Cevera’s fleet by Sampson, nothing of
very much importance has taken place at
th«' front, except; the'exchange of Lieut.
Hobson and his men, who are now free
again among their own countrymen, the
exchange being made July 7th.
At Santi »go there has been a truce for
several days pending the surrender of that
place. . During this time Shafter has
strengthened bis position and has received
reinforcements both in men and guns.
General Linares, of the Spanish at Santi­
ago, refuses to surrender tlm city, unless
his army are allowed to march out unmo­
lested. Shafter fixed the time when the
bombardment would commence, unless an
unconditional surrender was made and
from latest reports from there the bom­
bardment had begun in earnest, the few
Spanish gnus replying were soon silenced.
Sampson attempted to assist, with his fleet,
in the bombardment from outside the har­
bor, but on first trial failed to be of any
assistance.
Latest reports from the grettt naval fight
at Santiago give the Oregon nearly all the
glory of winning the light. She was res­
ponsible for the entire destruction of the
fleet, and only with her assistance was »he
capture of the Colon made sure.—It is
thought the Colon, Viseay i and Marie Ter­
esa, of the vanquished navy oan be saved to
the United States.—The prisoners taken in
the battle are n«»w„safely lodged at Ports­
mouth N. H., Cervera among the lot—Wat­
son’s squadron is expecte«! to sail at any
time for Spain. Nonews have been received
from the Philippines, except that our troops
are safely landed at Cavite. —Spain is get
ting tired of the war and would bring it to
a speedy end but for Uncle Sam’s demands
as conditions of peace, which are; “1st—
