Eleven full car goes of wheat and flour have left Port land for Europe, and a twelfth is in the stream loaded ami ready to cleai. A 5000-ton steamship, the Monmouthshire, brought to Portland the most valuable cargo ever entered at the poit, the lea ami silk amounting to over $1,500,000 Another immense steamer, the Glenlochy wi'h a capacity of 7500 lone, took aboard at Portland the largest cargo of lumber ever put afloat any where in the world, the total amount being over 3,200,000 feet, while another 6000-lon steamer, the City of Perth, carried away a cargo of 2,650,000 feet of lumber. COUNTY ITEMS. This is the man who, although he traveled to the Chicago convention on free passes, insisted with a great fiourish on paying the fare of himself au<l wife on the return trip, and who, during his presidential canvass, called everybody’s attention to the fact that he was paying his way, and to his contention that no one was entitled to special privileges from the railroads. Now, as a capitalist, a stockholder, he asks favors of a rail road company. If Bryan had not been receiving re cently a large income from bis book and the lectures in wluichlie has denounced corporations and their favors, his offense would not be so rank. Or if lie hid asked for half-fare usually allowed to children, no one would have objected But it looks as ifhe had been ciucify- ing opposition to corporate privilege on a cross of personal profit, The only loo| - hole for escape left Bryan is to plead that he was spoiling the Egyptians by making them expand motive power in carrying him long distances without re ceiving any return fol the service.
