but thought he’d lay his principles aside

The man of pencils then started awav,
but was burton-holed by the I). F., who
gently led him to Lamb’s book store.
There he purchased some neatly rolled
Havana weeds, and they retired to Lamb’s
back room.
The 1> L went on :
“No, 1 didn’t want the office. I was in
the liandw of my friends, mid 1 lold all of
tlietn not to work for me. Of course, I’d
been elected,i f all my party bad stood by
by me. but I’m better off the way it is
You see, I never went around nor spent
any money. Oh! if I’d got out and
worked a little I’d been elected just as
easy as not. Hut I didn’t want it.”
The scribe acquiesed . The I). F. then
became pathetic, and as the tears rolled
down l.is cheeks lie reiterated that “lie
didn’t want the office.” He pulled out
a bandana hankerehief, monped his man
ly brow and tried to smother his sobs,
and during this performance quill man
stole gently away, convinced that the I).
F. did want the office.
Obituary.
D ied —Mary Simmons, wife of E T.
Simmons, in Portland, June 13, 1894,
aged 25 years.
Mrs. Simmons, nee Mary Williams,
was well known in this place, having
grown up here from childhood. She was
born in Australia, but her parents moved
to California while she was very young,
and a little later to this county where
they have resided since.
She was married November 26, 1892,
to Mr. E. T. Simmons, a commission
merchant of Portland, ami resided there
until her death Her parents, one sister
and several brothers survive her.
The remains were brought to this place
for interment, ami the funeral occurred
Sunday, Rev. McLachlan conducting the
funeral service, after which the body was
laid to rest in I. O. O. F. cemetery.
The church was crowded during the
services, and a very large procession of
friends followed to the cemetery.
The bereaved husband and the relatives
of the deceased, have the sympathy of |
the public, as Mrs. Simmons had many ■
warm friends here, and was a general
favorite among the young people here be­
fore she made her residence in Portland
It is understood that H. F. Hoodspeed
will be our next deput}* sheriff, and that
Tom Coates will be deputy county clerk,
as soon as the new officials take their
seats.
