The INDEPENDENT, August 15, 2012 City has openings on many committees The City of Vernonia cur- rently has openings for com- munity volunteers on the fol- lowing committees; • Public Works Committee, meets fourth Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. • Vernonia Community Learning Center Committee, meets first Wednesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. at the Learning Center. • Parks Committee, meets third Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. • Economic Development Committee, meets third Tues- day of the month at 6:30 p.m. • Planning Commission, meets first and third Thursday of the month at 6:00 p.m. All meetings are at city hall unless otherwise noted. Committee members act in an advisory capacity to the city council. Their role is to promote the general welfare and eco- nomic benefit of the city and its citizens. They make recom- mendations to city council on “Old Grad” picnic is this Sunday The annual picnic of the Ver- nonia Society, “Old Grads” and Oregon-American Alumni will be held this Sunday, August 19, at Anderson Park. Registration starts at 10:00 a.m. Coffee will be provided. Bring a picnic lunch or buy a hot dog, chips and drinks from members of P.E.O., who offer this service as a fundraiser for girls’ and women’s scholar- ships. All current and former Vernonians are welcome. Bonamici sets meetings for area senior citizens next week Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici will be hosting sever- al senior town hall meetings to answer questions from senior citizens. Meetings will be on: • Monday, August 20, 10-11 a.m. at Hillsboro Senior Center, 750 SE 8th Ave, • Tuesday, August 21, 1-2 p.m. at St. Helens Senior Cen- ter, 375 S 15th St, and • Friday, August 24, 10-11 a,m, Astoria Senior Center, 1111 Exchange St. Welcome Additions Keith Owen East Keith Owen East was born August 1, 2012, to Austin and Sarah East of Longview, Wash- ington. He weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces and was 20-1/2 inch- es long. Grandparents are Barry and Cathy East of Hillsboro, Matt and Sue Blair of Vernonia, and Judy Brawley of Kelso, Wash. Great-grandparents are Owen and Claudine East of Vernonia and Obie and Jean Hoodman of Forest Grove. His aunties are Adrienne East of Missoula, Montana, Maggie Blair and Abby Blair, their own or at the request of the city council. Vernonia Night Out on Aug. 22 Vernonia Night Out will be held August 22, starting at 5:30 p.m., at Anderson Park. Highlights for this year’s event include Touch a Truck, the chance to explore civic op- portunities, demonstrations, family activities, a barbecue by the Vernonia Lions Club, and a raffle. The annual summer get-together will be held at the covered pic- nic shelter in Anderson Park, with hamburgers, hot dogs and bev- erages supplied by the senior center. The rest of the picnic is pot luck, so bring along your favorite summer dish for sharing while you catch up with old friends. Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy a summer day with others. Because school clothes can be very expensive, drop in to the senior center thrift shop and check out some terrific bargains on clothing for kids of all ages. Throughout the month of August, you can fill a paper bag with children’s clothes for just $5.00 per bag! Come in to see how much you can save! It seems to take a very long time for summer to reach our little valley, then it’s only a short time before fall arrives. Labor Day is just around the corner on Monday, September 3rd. The senior center will be closed on Labor Day. If you want to while away a hot summer day with congenial company, come see what’s going on in the senior center. Right af- ter lunch, a poker game or two can be found on Thursdays, plus more games on Fridays. On Tuesdays there will be needle work, quilting, etc., from 10 a.m. to closing (Yes, they break for lunch.). You can also get your blood pressure checked on the 4th Wednesday of each month from 11 a.m. to noon. Lunch is served Monday through Friday at noon. A $4.00 do- nation is suggested for those 60 and older, and $5.00 for those under 60. If you prefer lunch to go, for only $5.00 you can call ahead and place your order. You can play free Bingo with lunch each Monday starting at 11:45 a.m., and on the last Wednesday of each month, Wauna Federal Credit Union provides ice cream for all diners. This month’s 5 Area Lunch will be held Monday, August 27, in St. Helens, and August birthday honorees will be recognized at lunch on August 31st.
