Page 20 The INDEPENDENT, May 20, 2004 Obituary COY CHESTER BASS Coy Chester Bass, 78, Gresham, died April 25, 2004. Mr. Bass was born October 22, 1925, in Piave, Miss. He served in the Marine Corps during WWII. He moved to Vernonia after the war and to Gre- sham in 1950. In 1951, he married June Lambert. He worked as a custodian for Franz Bakery and the Centennial School Dis- trict. He was preceded in death by his wife. Survivors include two sons, Tim and Dewayne; one daughter, Christy Wil- son; two sisters, Barbara Rainey, Patti Angel Memorials Granite Markers Privately owned Not a funeral home or cemetery Dripps; two grandchildren. Remembrances are suggested to the American Cancer Society. AMANDA CHRISTINA BAYS Amanda Christina Bays, 16, Silver Springs, Nevada, died April 30, 2004. A memorial service was held May 13 at the Nazarene church in Hillsboro. Ms. Bays was born March 31, 1988, in Hillsboro, to Matt Bays and Pamela Vesterby. She was raised in Banks un- til moving to Nevada in third grade. She was back in Banks during sixth grade, then moved back to Nevada. ADA J. EVANS Ada J. Evans, 68, Tualatin, died May 8, 2004. No services were held. Mrs. Evans was born March 3, 1936, in Baker, Montana, to Rexford A. and Ruby M. (Helland) Normand. The family moved to Vernonia and she graduated from Vernonia High School in 1954 and then married. She lived in Springfield, Hillsboro, and Nenana, Alaska. In 1975, she married Gifford L. Evans. They lived in Winston. She moved to Tualatin in 2003. She was preceded in death by her husband; four brothers; three sisters. Survivors include three sons, Steven Lindsley of Tualatin, Randy Lindsley of North Pole, Alaska, Ken- neth Lindsley of Wasilla, Alaska; a daughter, Debra Wilson of Anchorage, Alaska; 13 grandchildren; eight great- grandchildren. Remembrances are suggested to the Oregon Heart Center in Eugene. ROBERT “LARRY” HENNESSY Robert “Larry” Hennessy, 67, Ver- nonia, died May 15, 2004. A gathering will be held May 22 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hennessy family home in Vernonia. Mr. Hennessy was born February 27, 1937, in St. Helens, to Albert C. and Frances L. (Carter) Hennessy. He was raised and educated in St. Helens, graduating from St. Helens High School. He served in the U.S. Navy. They made their home in the Scappoose and Warren areas until moving to Vernonia in 2001. He was a tugboat captain with the James River Corporation for thirty-one years until his retirement. He was preceded in death by a brother, Walt, and sister, Dee Schwab. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Cindy Hennessy of Long- view, and Shelly Cota of Vernonia; a brother, Tom, of Cathedral City, Calif.; two sisters, May Stroh of Kenai, Alaska, Barbara Rutz of Portland; three grand- children; nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held May 22, at 1:00 p.m. at Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home in Vernonia, with Mr. Sal Scott, of the Je- hovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall, officiat- ing, followed by private interment at Vernonia Memorial Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to a reception im- mediately following the chapel services at the home of Beulah Maiken. Mr. Reed was born December 11, 1929, on the family farm on Rock Creek Road (now known as Keasey Road), to Clarence and Gaynell (Wood) Reed. He graduated from Vernonia High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. In 1956, he married Patricia Jane King. They made their home in Vernon- ia. He worked at the Oregon American Mill until it closed in 1957, then worked for Sunset Lumber in Banks, the City of Vernonia Water Dept. and the Vernonia Memorial Cemetery. He was preceded in death by his wife; a brother, Ivan, and sister, Bernice Bodle. Survivors include a sister, Beulah Maiken of Vernonia; one nephew; grand-nieces and nephews. Reilly, 79, Canby, died May 6, 2004. A memorial service was held May 14 at Hillsboro Christian Church. Mr. Reilly was born February 20, 1925, in Troutdale, to James and Mabel Reilly. He was raised in Mountaindale and graduated from Banks High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and in the Air Force during the Korean War.
