I think summer is here, but it hasn’t made up its mind. It’s a little too hot a little too soon, and the poor Queen A nn’s lace is blooming too early. The lake is nice and cool at Oviatt’s Cove, though. Our Father’s Day came off nicely, I thought. Good music, good meal and three ladies read poetry to the Fathers and Grandfathers and, of course, all the Mothers, too. We presented a gift of appreciation to Louisa Pelster for being the Senior C enter’s Faithful Prayer W ar rior. Oldest Dad was Norbert Pel ster. Larry Bernardi was the Youngest Dad and also - remember these are senior citi- County Fair update: Premium, entertainment books now available Colum bia C ounty Fair & Rodeo books have been dis tributed to locations throughout the county. They are available at The Independent office in Vernonia. An Entertainm ent Book, an Open Class Premium Book and a 4H Premium Book outline the week-long happen ing at this year’s fair. Junior Rodeo Entry Applica tions are now being accepted at the Fair Office. There is a maximum of eight entries per event. Barrel Racing, Steer Daublin’, Steer/Calf Riding and Breadaway Roping for ages 18 and under are being offered. Ages 6 and under, weighing 40 pounds or less, may enter Mut ton Bustin. Entry fee for each event is $20.00. Pre-sold carnival ride tickets are available, for a savings of $2.00, at participating loca tions. These tickets must be taken to the carnival ticket office during the fair to receive an all-day ride wrist band. The wrist band is good for one day for one person. The ticket does not include admission into the fair. Season passes for children, students, adults and seniors are also available at participat ing locations. A season pass saves $5.00 on admission for the entire week. Most children - Norbert Pel ster had the Most Children and Bill Yeo had the Most Grand children. Several fun prizes were drawn and the door prize went to Janice Gray. Next, coming up on our cal endar is July. The center will have a special lunch on the 3rd, music and all. The auction for adults and kids is on the 4th from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Then, on Monday the 8th, Christmas in July and Halloween Too, starts - through the 13th. There are going to be many good bar gains, so put it on your calen dar. Oh yes, do n’t forget the parade on the 4th. Be sure and look for the Vernonia Cares entry. Bill Yeo and a friend will be charging up and down on 3 wheelers hoping to raise $$ for their Christmas in July Food and Fund for Christmas. They are doing very important work in this community and need your help (hands on) and finan cial support. The White House may say things are turning around financially, but in Ore gon and Columbia County, you can’t see it. They have had an increase in people served in the month of May. Coming up in August is the Senior Picnic, so watch for that. Affordable monthly rates In the center, a lady donated a Patriotic Quilt for raffling. Tickets are three for $1.00. The drawing date will be September 11. I know its hot, too hot to cook, so come in and enjoy Jam ie’s cookin Monday, Wed nesday and Friday, as well as Carol’s on Tuesday and Thurs day. Look at it this way, no heat in your kitchen and no dishes to do. Any ideas you’d like to see at the center, come in and let us know. We would appreciate your input. It’s your center. some of you.
