W atershed tech jo in s C olum bia SW C D The walls of the Vernonia branch of US Bank were literally covered with entries in their fall coloring contest and, after the community voted, the winners for each of the three age groups were announced. With the scooters they won for their skills are, from left to right, Katelyn Shadday, Brittany Murray and Shelby Grittman. After spending 32 years as a forest management engineer, Hoyt Laney, of Rainier, has tak en a position as a Watershed Technical Specialist with the Columbia Soil and Water Con servation District. Laney’s pri mary responsibility will be to provide technical assistance to individual landowners in the development of water quality management plans. Because of public concerns about improving water quality standards for the protection of people, fish and wildlife, law makers passed SB1010, a plan to prevent water pollution from agricultural activities and soil erosion. Efforts to save salmon and improve watershed health are also statewide conserva tion issues that will eventually require the owners of even small acreages to be aware of changes required for individual operations. Wu representative in Vernonia Wednesday in the W ashington Grade School Library. Also on the agenda will be a decision about which organiza tions will receive donations from Jamboree proceeds. Hoyt Laney Larry Steele speaker at Jamboree Committee final meeting of 2002 Larry Steele, who operates Cedar Ridge Sports Camp and Community Sports & Events, will be guest speaker at the fi nal 2001 meeting of the Ver nonia Friendship Jam boree Committee. Steele will discuss ideas for prom otions to in crease attendance and help in sure the continued success of Jamboree.
