The walls of the Vernonia branch of US Bank were literally
covered with entries in their fall coloring contest and, after
the community voted, the winners for each of the three age
groups were announced. With the scooters they won for their
skills are, from left to right, Katelyn Shadday, Brittany Murray
and Shelby Grittman.
After spending 32 years as a
forest management engineer,
Hoyt Laney, of Rainier, has tak
en a position as a Watershed
Technical Specialist with the
Columbia Soil and Water Con
servation District. Laney’s pri
mary responsibility will be to
provide technical assistance to
individual landowners in the
development of water quality
management plans.
Because of public concerns
about improving water quality
standards for the protection of
people, fish and wildlife, law
makers passed SB1010, a plan
to prevent water pollution from
agricultural activities and soil
erosion. Efforts to save salmon
and improve watershed health
are also statewide conserva
tion issues that will eventually
require the owners of even
small acreages to be aware of
changes required for individual
operations.

Also on the agenda will be a
decision about which organiza

from Jamboree proceeds. The
Jamboree Committee welcomes
public participation and invites
anyone interested to attend.
