Page 20 The INDEPENDENT, June 6, 2001 Obituary DAVID F. BRUNSMAN David Francis Brunsman, 80, Vernonia, died June 2, 2001. Mass of Chiistian Burial will be celebrated June 7 at 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Vernonia, with Father Heiko Junge, celebrant, assisted by Juanita Dennis, Pastoral Associate. Interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Mr. Brunsman was born July 18, 1920, in LaMoure, North Dakota, to Albert A. and Dora O. (Galeener) Brunsman. He grew up in LaMoure. He attended Jamestown College in Jamestown, North Dakota, majoring in accounting. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corp and was discharged in 1942. He married Margaret M. “Peggy” O'Rourke in 1945 in San Francisco. They lived in Phoenix briefly, then returned to San Francisco. In 1946, they moved to Vernonia. From 1946 to 1970, with his brother, Bert, and an uncle, Pete, they owned and operated Brunsman Hardware and Electric Store in Vernonia. Later, he worked as a field agent for the Department of Justice in the Welfare Recovery Division. Before retiring, he worked for West Oregon Electric for ten years. Mr. Brunsman was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Vernonia. He was preceded in death by a brother, John and a sister, Marian Little. Survivors include four sons, David F. Jr. of Myrtle Point, Peter M. of Bend, James P. and Richard A , both of Vernonia; two daughters, Carol A Gibney of Martinez, Calif., and Mary A. Hunt of Salem; two brothers, Albert A. “Bert" of Vernonia and Frank of St. George, Utah; two sisters, Dorothy Spencer of Placitas, New Mexico and Eleanor Cansdale of Buckley, Wash.; eight grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home in Vernonia was in charge of arrange ments. MARGARET M. T. PETTI Margaret MacDonald Thiele Petti, 85, Portland, died June 1, 2001. At her request, no service was held. Private entombment was at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Margaret MacDonald was born January 15, 1916, in Republic, Wash., to a Scottish father and Norwegian mother. When she was 5, her family moved to Vernonia. She graduated from Vernonia High School at 14 and headed straight for Northwestern School of Commerce in Portland. Tuition was steep at $20 a month. The $200 her father had given her wouldn't last long, so she finished a 15 month course in three months, leaving enough money to buy work clothes and hunt for a job. She landed a job as a bookkeeper at the Imperial Hotel, where she soon was running the dining room, too. Her efficiency was noticed by Henry Thiele, a German-born master chef. When he opened his own restaurant in 1932, he hired Miss MacDonald from the Imperial. The bookkeeper and the chef, 34 years her senior, were married in 1943. He died in 1952, at age 69. Later that year, she married August Petti, an Italian-born clothing designer who had become a restaurant patron. He soon joined his wife in the restaurant He died in 1991, at age 99. In her later life, Mrs. Petti was a phi lanthropist, using the Margaret MacDonald Thiele Petti Trust to help many organizations. When the new public library was under construction in Vernonia, she responded with a gener ous grant that was used to buy furnish ings for the library. The meeting room in the library is named in her honor. Survivors include a sister, Nina Hinton of Portland, nieces and nephews. Remembrances are suggested to American Diabetes Association, 380 SW Spokane, Portland OR 97202. GOLDIE V. ANDREWS Goldie Victoria Andrews, 83, Vernonia, died May 23, 2001. Funeral services were held in Vernonia Foursquare Church, with Pastor Paul Pastor, officiating. Private interment was in Alpine Cemetery in Alpine. Mrs. Andrews was born on April 16, 1918, in Oklahoma, to Henry and Molly (Hall) Stewart. They lived in many states, including Texas and New Mexico, until settling in the San Joaquin Valley of California. In 1941, she married Douglas L. Andrews. They lived in California until 1983, when they moved to Monroe, then to Springfield in 1986. In 1988, she moved to Vernonia. She was a member of the Alpine Assembly of God Church and the Vernonia Foursquare Church. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1986, five brothers and sis ters. Survivors include two sons, Donald O. “Butch” of Portland, and Gordon Jewell, until he retired in 1990. He had lived on the same homestead since he was two years old. Funeral services were held May 17 at Jewell School. Committal was at Elsie Cemetery. Mr. Twombly was born April 2, 1928, in Astoria, to Dexter “Blackie" and Tynne (llburg) Twombly. He was raised in Jewell. In 1949, he married Catherine Hanthorn. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.
