The “w inner” of this dubious award w as...Sw eepstakes. “A ggressive m arketing of sweepstakes prom otions has taken a toll on many citizens’ checking accounts,” said M y ers. “Through multiple courts actions, we have changed the sw eepstakes operations of Am erican Fam ily Publishers, United States Purchasing Ex change, Time, Inc. and most recently, we sued Publishers Clearing House.” Long distance tele pho ne com panies, num ber one on the list fo r the last tw o years, dropped to num ber four. C om plaints include billing errors and difficulties with cellular and local telephone service. New to the top 10 are viola tions of the “No Call” list law, which became effective Janu ary 1, 2000. “We expect to see 'No C all’ com plaints drop off in 2001 as we continue to file court actions against telem ar keters w ho violate the new law,” Myers said. For the first tim e in a de cade, com plaints against new and used car dealerships drop ped off the list.
