In recognition of National
Consum er Week, O regon A t
torney General Hardy Myers
announced the Top 10 C on
sum er Com plaint List for 2000.
The “w inner” of this dubious
award w as...Sw eepstakes.
“A ggressive m arketing of
sweepstakes prom otions has
taken a toll on many citizens’
checking accounts,” said M y
ers. “Through multiple courts
actions, we have changed the
sw eepstakes operations of
Am erican Fam ily Publishers,
United States Purchasing Ex
change, Time, Inc. and most
recently, we sued Publishers
Clearing House.”
Long distance tele pho ne
com panies, num ber one on the
list fo r the last tw o years,
dropped to num ber four. C om
plaints include billing errors
and difficulties with cellular and
local telephone service.
New to the top 10 are viola
tions of the “No Call” list law,
which became effective Janu
ary 1, 2000. “We expect to see
'No C all’ com plaints drop off in
2001 as we continue to file
court actions against telem ar
keters w ho violate the new
law,” Myers said.
For the first tim e in a de
cade, com plaints against new
and used car dealerships drop
ped off the list.
