The INDEPENDENT, April 5, 2000 Page 5 New Exec named for Logger group Associated Oregon Loggers has selected Jim Geisinger as Executive Vice President and CEO. He will replace H. Mike Miller, who will be managing the Friends of Paul Bunyan Foundation, which was created in 1997 by the association. Geisinger is currently presi dent of the Northwest Forestry A ssociation, w here he has been responsible for the man agement and direction of the trade association and their work on forest management is sues. He has served in that po sition since 1987. Geisinger was named by the Clinton administration as a for- est industry delegate to the 1993 Forest C onference chaired by Pres. Clinton and Vice-Pres. Al Gore. This con ference began a process that ultimately resulted in President C linton's N orthw est Forest Plan. Geisinger served a key role in the successful place ment of legislative language in the FY 1995 Interior Appropria tions Bill that effectively pre vented the closure of several northwest mills. Geisinger has a Forest Man agement degree and an MBA from Oregon State University. He will begin his new duties on June 1, 2000. The “Elusive Irish Y2K Bug” made an appearance in the Vernonia St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Just how it arrived in Vernonia was never quite explained. Annual Columbia County Garden Fair and sale set The fourth annual Columbia C ounty M aster G ardeners’ Town & Country Garden Fair and Plant Sale will be held Sat urday, April 29, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., in the St. Helens High School Commons. The garden fair and plant sale is free, and no registration is re quired. The event will also feature free seminars, a Master Gar dener’s Plant Clinic, and more. The sem inar beginning at 9:30 a.m. will deal with growing a prize-winning tomato. The second seminar, at 11:00 a.m., w ill focus on “ Planning the perennial garden,” with Eliza beth H ow ley of C lackam as Com m unity College H orticul ture Department. The Master Gardeners plant sale will feature a variety of tom ato plants, perennial and annual flowers, miniature ros es, shrubbery and trees. Blue Heron Herbary from Sauvie Island will be at the event, bringing an assortment of herbs and lavenders. St. H e lens Book Shop will have a va riety of books on gardening for to owner Lu- sale. According anne Kreutzer, they will focus on newer garden publications geared tow ard the Pacific Northwest, as well as a large selection of books on tom a toes. Earl Hendrickson will of fer handm ade baskets. His booth will emphasize baskets for the gardener, including har vest and gathering baskets, as well as wall baskets for display. Local Master Gardeners Tr- ish and Deon Reynolds will have a selection of their flower photography greeting cards available. There are 26 designs to choose from, and a ‘pick-a- bouquet” of cards assortment, which comes with a special gift box, will be available. Corvallis Master Gardeners Randy DiMilia and Jim Cassidy will fill their booth with ceramics for the gardener and hand made soaps. Randy has been making her own soaps for the past seven years and has for mulated one especially for the gardener. Jim will have plant ers designed specifically for outdoor use, as well as a se lection of indoor pots and wall mounted P in te r pockets for a greenhouse or deck Other vendors at the Gar den Fair and Plant Sale will be offering local honey, mason bee houses, and cut flowers. The Scappoose Garden Club and the 4-H club will join the event. The 4-H club will feature handmade fiber crafts. The seminar beginning at 9:30 a.m. will deal with growing a prize-winning tom ato.
