The INDEPENDENT, July 21, 1999 Page 11 Art works sought to express human side of housing discrimination The C olum bia C enter Art Committee is looking for works of art that explore issues of fair ness in the housing m arket place to accom pany an Oregon Fair Housing Council exhibit that will be visiting St. Helens in September. The art can illustrate the im pact that fair access to housing has on families and individuals as well as the impact of dis crimination. The Fair Housing Council exhibit is co-sponsored by Comm unity Action Team and the Columbia C enter Art Com mittee. It will be on display at A n I nvitation to Columbia C enter for two weeks during September. The exhibit, entitled “Any where but here,” contains pho tographs and inform ation chronicling the history of hous ing discrim ination in Oregon. “The Art Com m ittee strives to sponsor art exhibits that il lustrate social and cultural is sues in our com munity,” said M aeona U rban, com m ittee chair. “We are hoping artists in our region have created works that relate to fair housing is sues that can accom pany the state exhibit.” Fair housing laws prohibit O ur C lients ... The culture and eth nicity of our com m unity makes any discrim ination hard to see, even to its victims. It is often im possible to observe cases of insensitivity to a dis ability, extra dam age deposits charged or dishonest claims that an apartm ent is ‘already rented.’ ” Urban said she is hoping to show the face of discrimination as well as an image of true housing opportunity for all. “We hope the exhibit will help com m un ity m em bers, builders, buyers, landlords and tenants learn to recognize what discrim ination looks like."
