Art works sought to express human side of housing discrimination
The C olum bia C enter Art
Committee is looking for works
of art that explore issues of fair
ness in the housing m arket
place to accom pany an Oregon
Fair Housing Council exhibit
that will be visiting St. Helens in
September.
The art can illustrate the im
pact that fair access to housing
has on families and individuals
as well as the impact of dis
crimination.
The Fair Housing Council
exhibit is co-sponsored by
Comm unity Action Team and
the Columbia C enter Art Com
mittee. It will be on display at
A n I nvitation
to
Columbia C enter for two weeks
during September.
The exhibit, entitled “Any
where but here,” contains pho

chronicling the history of hous

“The Art Com m ittee strives
to sponsor art exhibits that il
lustrate social and cultural is
sues in our com munity,” said
M aeona U rban,
com m ittee
chair. “We are hoping artists in
our region have created works
that relate to fair housing is
sues that can accom pany the
state exhibit.”

“Housing discrim ination ex
ists throughout Oregon, includ

said Jim Tierney, deputy direc
tor of Com m unity Action Team.
“ D iscrim ination often centers
around the appearance of buy

makes any discrim ination hard
to see, even to its victims. It is
often im possible to observe
cases of insensitivity to a dis

rented.’ ”
Urban said she is hoping to
show the face of discrimination
as well as an image of true
housing opportunity for all.
“We hope the exhibit will
help com m un ity m em bers,
builders, buyers, landlords and
tenants learn to recognize what
discrim ination looks like."
Examples include inaccessi

Hot weather can harm your pets
Here are some tips from the
Oregon Veterinary Medical As
sociation for keeping your pet
com fortable and healthy on hot
sum m er days:
• Never leave your pet unat
tended in a vehicle during
warm days. Even when outside
tem peratures are a moderate
70 degrees, tem peratures in
side the car can quickly climb
to m ore than 100 degrees.
Dogs do not perspire, so they
pant to take in cooler air.
M ost cases of heatstroke
happen when dogs are locked
in cars with the windows up or
cracked. Heatstroke can mean
quick death for your pet,
• Do not exercise your pet
during midday in hot weather;

do not let your pet drink a lot of
