Meeting set on Coleo changes By Noni Andersen People in Vernonia are sign ing petitions to keep “the coun ty from taking COLCO away.” This won’t happen - with or without petitions - but the fact that people feel so threatened about the only public trans portation available here, makes it obvious that there are some major problems. Most of the county senior centers realize that there was little account ability in the past and that a tightening budget requires more control. Changes directed for Ver nonia COLCO, however, have hit the community harder than they are willing to accept. In addition to cutting the number of hours for drivers, Vernonia COLCO was told that only one trip a week out of county would be allowed, and that had to be on Monday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Cooper told The INDEPEN DENT that was amisunder- standing, that the only change made was to reduce the num ber of hours for the drivers, in order to keep costs down. "How Vernonia COLCO uses the drivers is up to them,” she said. When read a statement signed by Clauser that said “...This will limit the number of trips out of county to one trip each week during the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Mondays only...” Cooper said she was unaware of the memo and hadn’t seen it in advance. The Vernonia Senior Citi zens Center has arranged a meeting with Cooper and Clauser for Thursday, August 5 at 1:00 p.m. Vernonia City Ad ministrator Mike Sykes will be at the meeting and Columbia County Commissioner Tony Hyde has said he will try to at tend. This is a public meeting and any interested person may at tend. The Vernonia Friendship Jamboree will get off to a good start at 4:00 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, with the Kids’ Fishing Derby at Vernonia Lake, under the ca pable hands of members of the Nehalem Valley Chapter of the Izaak Walton League. Free, live entertainment will start at the same time as Curtis “King” Chamberlain and Blind Rootin’ Hogs kick off the 12th annual Alternative Stage. The stage will be behind the Joy Theater this year, once again with a full weekend of enter tainment. If you don’t feel like cooking breakfast on Saturday or Sun day, the Sweet Adelines will entertain you while you have breakfast at the senior citizens center, from 8 a.m. to noon. Of course there will be lots of food vendors around, as well as good food available from local restaurants. Cars and guns Camp. Cedar Ridge is on Keasey Road, north of Vernonia.
