The INDEPENDENT, Sept. 13,1995 Pag* 8 Vernonia Council hears proposal for realigning California Street A proposed realignment of California Street that would co st the C ity of V ernonia about $4,500 and create a safer area for parking next to W ashington Grade School, was presented to the City Council Sept. 5 by Jim Tier ney of C om m unity A ctio n Team (CAT). C a lifo rn ia S treet, which runs north-south along the east side of WGS, w ill be come the primary egress for people living at Blue Heron Hollow, a 24-unit townhouse/ apartment development pro posed by CAT for an area just east of the school. There is already concern about safety in the school’s parking area, w hich encom passes both sides of the street. The pro posed re a lig n m e n t w ould curve the street to the east, leaving the existing street for use as a parking lot. In order to cover the cost of the alternative route, CAT has asked the city if it would waive part of its w ater and sewer hook-up fees. Since the development will have a master water meter instead of individual m eters fo r each residence, reducing the city’s installation, the difference is approximately $4,500. While taking no action at th is tim e , the c o u n c il e x pressed tentative approval for the proposal. The council was presented with a petition from the own ers of properties bordering C o lum bia S tre e t be tw een First and Second Avenues, asking the city to vacate that section of the street. Accord ing to the petitioners (Bruce Herb, Arthur and Enid Par- row, Benny & Rhonda Cut- right, Mark and Debra Hall), the street hasn’t been im proved in that block and is not maintained as a street. A city sewer line runs the distance of the street, howev er. City Attorney Tom Kohl will review the situation and re port to the council at a later meeting.
