Pag» 16 The INDEPENDENT, April 13,1994 — B B o síSS ;S>5 MMM CHARLES L BIGGS Charles Leroy "Charlie" Biggs, 97, Vernonia, died March 25, 1994, at a Forest Grove care center. Graveside services were held March 28 at W illam ette National Cemetery in Portland, with Pastor Ted Bjorem of the Vernonia Christian Church offici ating. Full military honors were un der the direction of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 4248 in Portland. Mr. Biggs was bom May 3, 1896, in Holton, Kansas, to John and Ruby M atscher Biggs. He was a child when his family moved to Sherwood, where he grew up and went to school. He was a veteran of World War I, who served in the U.S. Navy during 1918 and 1919. He married Ida E. "Freda” John son in 1920 in Vancouver, Wash., and they made their home in Vernon ia. His wife died in 1972. Mr. Biggs was a farmer. In 1926 he helped build the Vernonia Golf Course and was a one-third partner in the business. He was a member of American Legion Post 19 in Vernonia and was a 40-N-8er. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mamie, and two brothers, Clarence and Fred. Survivors include a daughter, Sal ly M. Harrison of Vernonia; a son, John L. of Forest Grove; four grand children; four great-grandchildren; one niece and several great and great-grand nieces and nephews. The family suggests that remem- brances be contributions to the Ver nonia Senior Center. Fuiten-Rose Chapel of Vernonia was in charge of arrangements. NOLAN E. FRANK Nolan Eugene Frank, 6 months, Hillsboro, died March 19, 1994, in his home of sudden infant death syn drome (SIDS). A Mass was held March 25 in St. Matthew Catholic Church in Hillsboro. He was bom Sept. 14, 1993, to Raymond and Anne-Marie Frank. Survivors in addition to his par ents include a brother, Rian; grand parents, Kathy Frank of Aloha, Earl and Mary Frank of Jewell, and Tom my and Pat Wall of Ireland. The family suggests that remem brances be contributions to Oregon Chapter, SIDS Alliance, P.O. Box 1641, Beaverton, 97075. BARBARA L NICE Barbara Lou Nice, 44, Buxton, died March 24, 1994, of injuries re ceived in an automobile accident near Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. Fu neral services were held April 1 at the Fuiten-Rose chapel in Forest Grove, with Pastor Bruce Swanson, of the Buxton Assem bly of God Church, officiating. Inurnment was in Buxton Cemetery. Mrs. Nice was bom Sept. 7, 1949, in Salem, to John and Lois Smith Howard. She was reared and educat ed in Hillsboro. She married Gene R. Nice in 1966 at Beaverton. She served as Postm aster at Buxton for the past eleven years and previously owned and operated Bux ton Food & Feed. She was a mem ber of Sunset Grange. Survivors include her husband; mother, Lois Meek of Cornelius; fa ther John Howard of Florida; two chil dren, John L. of Gresham and An gela R. Johnson of Sweet Home; two brothers, Marvin Howard of North Plains and James Howard of Cor nelius; four sisters, Donna Willard of Seattle, Wash., Patricia Ostrander of Hillsboro, Juanita Dennis of Vernonia and Nancy Kemper of Forest Grove; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The family suggests that remem brances be contribu tions to the Banks High School Athletic Fund, c/o Banks High School, 450 S. Main St., Banks, 97106. RAYMOND BUCKNER Raymond R. Buckner, 74, Hills boro, died March 16 at a Hillsboro hospital. Memorial services were held March 19 and vault entombment was In Valley Memorial Park Mau soleum, Hillsboro. Mr. Buckner was born Dec. 2, 1919, at Liberal, Kansas, the son of Dave and Artie Wilhite Buckner. He was educated in Liberal and lived there until 1935, when he moved to Vernonia. He started driving a log truck at the age of 18. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946. —— - After his discharge he continued driving log trucks until retiring in 1973. Survivors include his sons, Bill Ray Buckner of Cornelius and Dave Robert Buckner of Vancouver, Wash.; a daughter, Nancy Rae Lyons of Hillsboro; brothers, W.A. Buckner of California and Ed Buckner of Ver nonia; sisters, Fern McAlister and Mabel Mills of California and Alma Bond of Oregon; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Remembrances may be contribu tions to the American Heart Assoc. Forest Grove Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements. FLOYD “CLIFFORD” WILLIAMS Floyd “Clifford' Williams, 83, Hay ward, died April 6, 1994, at his home. Funeral services were held April 9 at Gales Creek Community Church of God, with Pastor Ivan U. Marble offi ciating. Interment was at Hayward Cemetery. Mr. Williams was bom March 21, 1911, in Gould, Okla., to Jake Willie and Pearl Dixon Williams. He grew up in Cyril, Okla. He married Virginia “Viola” Sawyer in 1936 in Anadarko, Okla. They lived in Cyril until moving to Visalia, Calif., in 1945. In 1952 they moved to Gale3 Creek, then to Hayward in 1959. He worked for the Washington County Road Department for twenty- one years, retiring in 1974. He also farmed. SPENCER Hilda Spencer, 82, Rainier, died March 29, in a Longview, Wash., hospital. Graveside services were held A p ril 1 at W hittle-H ubbard Cemetery in Castle Rock, Wash., with Pastor Willard Loewen officiat ing. Mrs. Spencer was born in Charleston, N.H., July 8, 1911, to Jeremiah and Zolla M. Adams Rank ins. She married John Lampman, who died in 1963. In 1968 she mar ried Sidney Spencer. They moved to Rainier in 1989 from Vernonia. Survivors in addition to her hus band, include four sons, Raymond Lampman and David Welty, both of Castle Rock, Wash., Carl Welty of Kelso and Allen Welty of Ketchikan, Alas.; a sister, Alice Beardsley of Ca marillo, Calif; a brother, Leslie Men zies of Guild Hall, VL; thirteen grand children; several great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
