M M M N M B IM P age 4 The INDEPENDENT, Jan. 2 9 ,1 9 9 2 Loggers holding own in league basketball play, need more wins W orking to im prove their league record, the Vernonia High School boys' basketball team fought Neah-Kah-Nie to a 64-54 win in spite of the fact they were down by 19 points in the second quarter. Three team members, Jasen VonHeeder, Trey Williamson and Matt Schmidlin all scored in double digits with 14, 13 and 12 points, respectively. The second q u a rte r against Colum bia Christian again found the Loggers in trouble, but they were unable to re co ve r and lost to the Knights 71-54. W illiam son contributed 21 points and 12 rebounds to the effort; Marc Julian added 12 points. Vernonia fell at the hands of C atlin G able, 53-68, as th e ir shooting hands went cold. Earlier in the month, the Warrenton Warriors lost to the Loggers , 68-40. The boys also defeated Clatskanie, 78- 70, as Julian bucketed 23, followed by Williamson's 19 Vernonia girls basketball team continues to struggle The Vernonia High School varsity girls' basketball team has found it d ifficu lt to im prove their league record, but they haven’t quit trying. The g irls im proved th e ir overall record with a win over the Neah-Kah-Nie Pirates on the 13th, by a score of 42-20. High scorer of the game was Tonya Jo n e s w ith 18, fo l lowed by Silke Hermann with 10 points. B etter play is goal of Banks basketball team Banks High School boys' varsity basketball team had a disappointing month, losing all th re e of th e ir gam es in spite of a good effort by the whole team. They lost to Gladstone by a score of 106-83, to Sher wood by 96-77, and to Esta cada 90-84. Craig Herbert led the team in s c o rin g , w ith 20 p o in ts a g a in s t G la d sto n e and 17 points against Sherwood. Ja son Ackerm an bucketed 19 points against Estacada. The boys junior varsity had more success, w ith wins in two of their three games. A fter losing to Gladstone by ten points, 82-72, the JVs cam e back with a ten point win over Sherwood, 69-59. In a tighter, but still victori ous game, the Braves defeat ed Estacada by 84 to 79. Warrenton was the site of the game on Jan. 6, as the Loggers were defeated 28- 48. Significant scorers were Jones, Miriah O'Dair and Her mann. Another loss, to Portland Adventist on the 21st, was at tributed greatly to four miss ing players, combined with a tea m tire d fro m s e m e s te r testing. Although defeated by Ore gon Episcopal School, by five p o in ts on the 24th, head coach Gordon "Crow" Crow- ston believed "It was the best ball game we have played yet." A fter being outscored in the third quarter, the Loggers fought back to a tie, then fell behind again in the last two minutes to lose 42-47. High scorer was Rebecca Jensen with 16, followed by O'Dair's 10 points and 11 re bounds. Jones and Jensen also nabbed rebounds, with 7 each. pj and Matt Mingefs 12 points. The Loggers im proved their record again with wins o ve r O regon E p iscop al School and Portland Adven tist School. They came on strong on the 24th to outscore OES by 16 points in the first quarter. "We came out and played ex cellently in the first quarter," said head coach Scott Finlay, "which made the rest of the game relatively easy." The final score was 65-53. The girls started in a duel with Sherwood that ended in a 2 point loss, 42-40, and fol lowed that by beating Glad stone 46-39. Andrea Schae fe r led the scoring fo r the Lady Braves in both games with 18 points against Sher wood and 14 against G lad stone. Unfortunately, th e ir third game was a crushing 43-19 defeat to Estacada, as the high point player, Lois Duyck, managed only 7 points. Hood River was victorious against the girls, 44-37, in spite of a 21 point effort by Schaefer. In the last gam e of the month, the varsity team lost a squeaker to LaSalle by two points, 41-39. The losses were to Sher wood, 43-30; Gladstone 49- 22; Estacada, 43-31; Hood River, 64-19; and LaSalle by on ly tw o p o in ts , 37-35. Sheila Evers had the hottest scoring hand on the team , with high points for four of the five games. "We are a young team ," Head Coach Christie Tatylor com m ented, "The kids are becoming more competitive every tim e. We are doing things a lot better than at the beginning of the year, but we still have a ways to go." AH W Z & SCHWAB with 24 and Erik Davis fin ished the game off with 10 re bounds. In a total team effort that saw Portland Adventist fall to the Loggers, 88-77, Julian w ent to the bu cket fo r 33 points, but "Everyone had a key part in the win," said Fin lay.
