"Spruce aphids will begin attacking spruce trees and other evergreen landscape shrubs and trees in late Jan uary and F eb ru ary," says Chip Bubl, Oregon State Uni versity Extension agricultural agent in Colum bia County. Spruce aphids are tiny, dull green aphids that increase rapidly in num bers shortly after their initial appearance. Spruce aphid damage is evident during the first warm days of spring. The needles of plants, pierced and sucked dry by the aphid, turn yellow or brow n and dro p to the ground. However, the damage is actually done during the win ter. Control measures must be taken early in the year or potential aphid infestations will be difficult to stop. Sprays of diazinon or lin dane, plus a wetting agent, are effective if applied soon. Try to spray when several hours of dry weather will fol low the spray applications. Do not spray when outdoor te m p e ra tu re s are below freezing. Spray coverage should be as com plete as possible for maximum aphid control.
