AN INDEPENDENT ' REPUBLICAN NEWSPAPER "Let u have faith that tight make might, ana in that faith let us to the end dare to do our duty at we understand it" Ahraham Lincoln. THE KLAMATH DAILY NEWS Feminisms KLAMATH PAiTj THURSDAY, A Hy -'Annette Bradshaw The Pelican Baseball Team It has traveled down the annals of history, those dy ing words of an admiral whose ship was getting the worst of it in a fight "Don't give up the ship." That was the spirit of the Klamath Falls baseball club. when, the season half over, they found themselves likely to finish in the second division; j They didn't give up. As a result, today tijey are j running neck and neck with the leaders of the Siskiyou- j Klamath league. ' Klamath, a spirited community, has been sadly lack- j ing in the spirit of sport one of the most solid rocks j Americanism is built on. Nothing, perhaps, will go far ther toward bringing about community spirit than clean athletics. You may go back to ancient Greece for the truth of that statement. The Pelicans only a bush league baseball club.' But they represent the cream of local baseball talent They are vieing with the strength of five well organized teams of northern California for supremacy. The prestige Klamath Falls will get if they win the pennant, and of course we hope they shall, will not be small And here '8 another ai gle. It is estimated that dur ing the nine home games, no less than 3,000 outsiders, from northers California, came to Klamath. Of these perhaps half never h;.J jeen here before. They came. They saw. They went. They my return and to stay. W AM 1 ' .1 Planting for Profits Farmers Can Win By Dwersifying Croops it iT7t- WHEN DAME FASHION DECREES CIVILIZED BARBARISM. PEGGY "My dear, the poor, benighted heathens have nothing on you when it -omes to adornment. Their hoop earrings, though, aro not nearly so practical tiz your adorable watch earring." ANITA "Don't talk, my dear! I've been wondering how on earth you keep that earring on, that outlines the lobe of your car so smartly." Sunny Dick Says A recent survey of the Yakima valley by the depart ment of agriculture declares that the farmers of that sec tion have shown poor judgment in selecting their crops for planting on the oasis of relative profits for the pre vious year, thereby producing much to sell when prices are low and very little when prices are high. If prices fall off one year, the next year little is planted of that crop, and so the growers lose the benefit of the price re covery. Conversely, high prices one year result in an overwhelming producion of the favored crop the next, and selling values hit the toboggan. This situation is not confined to the Yakima valley, but exists so generally in agricultural sections that many of the shrewder farmers make it a rule to plant those crops of which there was a surplus the year before, know ing that the majority will plant those of which there was a shortage. As a general rule the farmer who specializes in cer tain diversified crops, year in, year out, beats the game. Convicts' Story Enlightening Not Much Crcdis To Officials The story of the prison battle and escape as written by Murray and signed by his fellow convicts, Ellsworth Kelly and John Willos, and given to their forced host, makes good reading, even if it is more or less typical "con talk," colored to suit the fancy of the desperadoes, and to be taken with a grain of salt In many respects, the convicts' narrative is confirm ed by the investigation now in progress by the coroner. Neither account reflects much credit on prison officials or management, and both prove that in the battle of wits and daring, the convicts had all the best of it. It seems incredible that such an escape could be made, and so little interference experienced from officials who watched the break in progress. o If you would have things come your way, go after them.
