Tha locomotives are of a dlatlnctly saw type, developed by the American Locomotive Company In co-operation with Southern Psclflc's mechanical experts. The adding of ths third cylinder has sn effect similar to that obtained by increasing the num ber of cyllndera ln an automobile en gine from tour to six. i In addition to providing lncresaed power and economy ln use of steam, the third cylinder will dlatribute the stresses on two driving axles Instead of one. The locomotives - weigh (82,400 pounds snd have a tractive power of M.S30 pounds, or weigh 115.68 pounds per one horsepower. Their hauling capacity is one-fourth more at a speed ot 25 miles per hour on a l.t per cent grade than that of tha moat powerful locomotive hereto fore In uae by the company. The locomotives are 101 feet 1 Inch In length and It feet t Inches In height. They hare a 4-10-1 wheel ar rangement and a total wheel base of 8? feet 114 Inches. Each of the driv ing wheels is 63 !4 Inches in diameter. The tender has a capacity of 12,000 gallons ot wster and 4,400, gallons ot fuel oil. ......
