OREGON ahtppera and travalara
have the world'a moat power
ful alngle unit freight and
paaaengar locomotive at their
service.
Tha first of sixteen new three
cylinder 8outhern Pacific type loco
motives have Juat reached the Pa
ctflo Coast and are being placed In
heavy freight and paaaengar aervlce
by 8outharn Pacific Company In the
Siskiyou and Sierra-Nevada moun
tains. .
Tha locomotives are of a dlatlnctly
saw type, developed by the American
Locomotive Company In co-operation
with Southern Psclflc's mechanical
experts. Everyone has aomethtng of
the small boy's tntereat In locomotives
and wherever the. new locomotive!
have bean aesn they have attracted
Unuansl Interest, both from the pub
lic and railroad employee on account
of their alie, power and dealgn.
Toe new locomotives will sll be In
aervlce before tha peak traftlo move
ment ln tha fall.
"They are tha most modern devel
opment In locomotive construction and
are good evidence ot Southern Pacific
efforts to develop and '.throve Us
facllltlea to keep pace with the prog
ress of this Western country," J. H.
Dyer, general manager, said in com
menting on the new titans of the
rails. "The West requires the beat of
transportation, for Its products move
many ml lea to market The new loco
motivea represent our, desire to take
advantage of . every worthwhile Im
provement In railroad Industry."
Tha outstanding feature ot the new
locomotlvea Is the third cylinder,
placed Inalde ot the main framea and
slightly above ud between toe two
outside cylinders. The adding of ths
third cylinder has sn effect similar to
that obtained by increasing the num
ber of cyllndera ln an automobile en
gine from tour to six. i
In addition to providing lncresaed
power and economy ln use of steam,
the third cylinder will dlatribute the
stresses on two driving axles Instead
of one. The locomotives - weigh
(82,400 pounds snd have a tractive
power of M.S30 pounds, or weigh
115.68 pounds per one horsepower.
Their hauling capacity is one-fourth
more at a speed ot 25 miles per hour
on a l.t per cent grade than that of
tha moat powerful locomotive hereto
fore In uae by the company.
The locomotives are 101 feet 1 Inch
In length and It feet t Inches In
height. They hare a 4-10-1 wheel ar
rangement and a total wheel base of
8? feet 114 Inches. Each of the driv
ing wheels is 63 !4 Inches in diameter.
The tender has a capacity of 12,000
gallons ot wster and 4,400, gallons ot
fuel oil. ......
In addition to tha sixteen three
cylinder locomotives, . the Southern
Pacific is further Increasing its. mo
tive power by building In Its own
shops eighteen 4-8-2 mountain, type
locomotives to be used ln Its trans
continental passenger traffic. These
locomotlvea hare been T-klng through
runa ot 816 miles.
