LOCALS PLAY ERRORLESS BALL 1 H-INNING BATTLE; MOHLER BAFFLES SHASTAS -SECOND TIME Arnold And Mohler Get Homer; Bayneis GeU On Bat hing Rampage And Drives Home Two Needed Runt In Hair Raiting Eleventh . After dropping two straight games, when the breaks went the wrong way,' the Pelicans migrated out of the city feunday and covered themselves with glory by winning a hectic ll-ihning- ball game, under the shadows of the snow-capped peak of Mount Shasta. When the last Shasta man up popped but in that , fateful 11th inning the Pelicans heaved a deep tigK of relief they, had won-5 to 4. But it was anyone's game irbra start to finish. The Pelicans, who took the lead in the second inning, and kept it until they were tied in the eighth, were constantly threatened by the treacherous Shastas. No harder fought battle, nor more exciting contest has ever been played anywhere. ley. Bruce. Struck out by Mohler IS. Bay S. Col If due t. But on ball Mohler J. Bay 0. I. i ''Sunny" Mohler worked for the Pelican, and as usual the bard working southpaw "was "right." Ht pitched himself out . of every hdje with, the judgment and con trol of a .Christy Mathewson. .'And there were many holes. At least time when. a hit meant a run or two , for tie Shastas he prored equal to the. occasion by either striking out a couple in a tow or . grooving his fast ones In in SUch a way the enly pop tips re sulted from the Shasta "war clubs. Twelve, times Shasta hopefuls after a ! hit, ''tanned the air for a tow of. a doxen strikeouts. Mohler, also socked a circuit clout over' the fence, which proved to be the winning tally. But It wasn't a one man team Sgnday. Mohler has "French" Bayness, Bert Arnold, Al Norwest and .Mickey Hewitt as well a the entire team to thank for turning in victory. They gave him air tight support and the Klamaths played their first errorless game of the season. The Pelicans drew first blood in the second, when Bayness led oft with a scratch hit. He reach ed second on a sacrifice by Staler, stole third and '. came In on De mltt' single. Neither team scored again until 7th. In the Pelican half Bert Arnold, the first man up, smacked one of Bay's fast ones for a row of base hits that ended, at home plate. The ball cleared the fence between left . field and ten-1 ter,by nearly 20 feet and may be rolling yet The Shastas came back In their half when Davenport duplicated Arnold's stunt, although the, hit as not so long. The Pel icans . pulled up In the first halt of the eighth and decided a 2 to 1 lead was not sufficient. At least Mohler was of that opinion. De- mitt struck out .Mohler hit the first ' baTl ' pitched over the fence ! aid the count was 3 to 1. Bay, I who-bad pitched a good game up until (his . time was yanked after the home run ana .replaced by Col ledge. This bird Colledge threw a ' ball that resounded in the air from 4ts steam, but the kid lacked con trol. In spite of the fact, he whif fed 6 Pelicans in 4 Innings. Col ledge retired the side. - The Shastas went to bat In their half of the 8th, determined to start their dirty work. They did. Colledge struck out" Brools dou bled Into left tleM. Bruce hit Into the 4nfleld and was sate at first when Norwest tried to nail Brooks at third. It was a close play but Brooks was safe at third. Loud went out, Norwest to Arnold. Bruce got to second safely because he had taken a big lead off and went' down on an apparent hit and ran play. Lee, the next Shasta man up got a Texas leaguer into oenterfield and both Bruce and Brooks ' scored. It was anybody's game now it It ever was. Mohler started burning them In harder than he has ever been known to (n previous games. But he had the control with it and the hard hitting Devenport fanned for the last out. ;.. Neither team scored In the ninth. In the tenth Norwest got a double with 2 out but Watts 'struck out and the Pelican short stop died on base. Mohler was go ipg fine. The Shastas were retired iti one, two, three order, j And i then the 11th rolled around. Mathews singled into rightfleld. rnold tingled and. Mathews went tb third. The Shastas foiled to sail Mathews at third and Arnold went 1 o second ' ' on ' the play. !'renchy Bayness socked one of Col edge's fast breaking steam balls for a slashing - double and Math ews and Arnold romped horn, fetafey fanned. Clark singled Into right. ' Bayness made the third out when he ran Into Demltt'a bat ted ball. Still the Shastas fought. A new ball was , thrown out and Palmer hit the. first heave of Mohler's over the fence. .The score waa now S to (4 and 'It looked like a' bat ting rampage was on. Lee the next , man up doubled. Devenport was sate on a fielder's choice, and Lee was safe at third. Things had gone too far. Kane were down and a man on first and third. Moh ler again' rose to the occasion. The side was retired on little Infield popout or rollers. The Pelicans went to the showers a happier out fit, and rated among the most dan gerous teams on the circuit. The Score Klamath Falls AB. R.
